Best defenders

On the pitch yes, but that's allowed if he's on your team.

Off the pitch I don't recall him F***ing the wife of his team mate?

Nor did he suffer from a woefully annoying squeaky cockney voice. I’d have liked to have given him a bat just for the way he talks, never mind the multitude of other reasons to batter him 😉

Outstanding though wasn’t he.

So are we judging these defenders as people or as footballers? Your post was about best defenders.

Yes and I already mentioned that our appraisal of players can be influenced by their personality as well.

Would you have liked him to have played for the Boro?

Oh dear

You'd have been happy with El-Hadji Diouf, Vinny Jones, Joey Barton, Dennis Wise as well? All decent footballers, but total dicks

Nope I wouldn’t. None of them nowhere near as good as Terry was in his position. Wouldn’t touch Diouf with a barge pole. Mainly because he’s *****.

You don't play in the Premier League for 10 years, including Liverpool, if you're ****

I didn’t rate him. Barton wasn’t my cup of tea either. Would of still been happy if Ex England Captain and premier league and champions league winner John Terry played for us though.

Are you that Chelsea troll from the old board in disguise?

Can’t stand Chelsea. Just rate John Terry. I get it you don’t like him. Not many people do on a personal level, I am judging him on his football ability, he was a world class centre half.

Franco was tiny for his position, maybe 5 9?! I physically bumped into him outside Anfield at Euro '96, looked him up and down with the drunken 'I know you from somewhere' look....then realised he was mid-interviewed as I barged him then stared at him. Probably looked a right nutter on Italian TV. Anyway absolutely granite on the pitch, but Maldini was a better allrounder, tough, quick, intelligent, committed, never missed a game, never missed a tackle.

Rio was better than Terry imo, although different styles who complimented each other for England.
Yeah, my vote goes for my boy Rio, quicker, better on the ball, more of an athlete. But one of the key things was decision making and discipline. Terry got 8 red cards in his career Rio 1 and that was a two yellow-carder. Terry got 7-10 yellows a season, Rio 0-4, he didn't dive in, Rio didn't leave his team mates playing as 10 men for an hour, Rio didn't get a yellow 10 mins in then have to pull out of challenges to stay on the pitch. Terry was a bit of a liability at times with his decision making. Rio wasn't. Now I know Terry brings a goal threat that Rio never really had, but we're talking about defending here, and Rio was a country mile better. There are those that will think Terry's big crunching tackles are a positive, they indicate a mistake has been made.

No point saying anything more on Maldini. One of my favourite players of all time.

No Cannavaro mentions yet? By logic the used by someone on the best non european/South American thread, as the only one to win world player of the year he must be the best defender of all time? 😏 (He is up there of course).

Cafu is worth a shout, although as with Dani Alves his greatness was as much to do with attacking play as his defensive.

Roberto Ayala? Another to go on the list for best short **** defenders.

For Boro I doubt I'll ever see better than Southgate and Ehiogu (I'm too young for Maddren/Boam). Ehiogu doesn't get enough credit for me. As an out and defender/stopper he was immense. As good as I've seen for anyone. If he had better ability on the ball he'd have been an England regular. And wouldn't have been playing for us.
