i havnt been in Bradford (brat-for) for many a year - however during the late 70s when we went to see punk bands down there, the best curry houses were actually someones house in the street - and it cost between 30p and 50p - so you needed local knowledge.

an ordinary terraced house, a knock on the door and in you went straight through to the back kitchen and 20 minutes later a super curry with rice was in front of you.

accepted our tastes and knowledge wernt as 'sophisticated' as today - so there were no balti's or pathia;s or bhuna's - but you would ask for a madras or a vindaloo or a biriyani.

the local would then know which house to go to ! - happy simple polite days - so perhaps get there early and ask a local when you park up your car in a side street or on the walk over to the ground

I just think Akbars is over rated and overpriced. Something authentic that the locals go to.
I appreciate it’s a chain now but I wouldn’t be surprised if locals go to Akbars there. But fair enough I appreciate you want something different. I actually don’t mind the Akbars in Boro.

Had a very good ruby in Darlo recently. Maybe I should save that story for a more relevant thread.

Some do but Akbars is seen as a more British place amongst Bradford folk in general. I say that for context as someone with a mate who is Asian and lives in Bradford

I've just text him to ask him where he rates as the best

A relative from Leeds went to a place called Bhajis and Beer in Bradford a few weeks back and reckoned it was one of the best curries he has had, no idea personally or even where it is exactly

He's said;

Sheesh mahal best curry and mixed grill!

Westgate had the best curry but they are closed, hopefully reopen.

If do want Akbars type then the original akbars original is on Leeds road

Karachi is a down to earth and very good little restaurant, just behind the Film and Tv museum in the city center, Neal Street. Been going there for 30+ years. Not expensive, just a simple place.

Lived in Bradford for roughly 3 years and that was going to be my recommendation. It’s not near the centre though so would need to drive there.
In the centre only place I’ve been is my mylahore which was okay.
Bizarrely I never found a really good place in Bradford and prefer Jolsha/Vada now I’ve moved back to the area.
