Bernina Express - Advice - Anyone Done It?

Looking for some guidance please from anyone who may have done this trip already, or looked into it.
The two of us (early 60s) are thinking of taking a trip on the Bernina Express maybe this June but have no idea of what to tag onto either end of the trip. Not even sure of which direction to go or whether to do both directions.
One option we thought of was fly into Zurich, head to Chur then take the Bernina Express south and then visit Milan and maybe Florence, or something along those lines.
Wife quite fancies flying into Milan then heading North and visiting some Swiss/Austrian alpine villages by rail. Vienna was looked at to visit but we decided we may do that as a separate trip in the future due to the travel time.
Planning on a week maybe 10 days , have no experience of the continental railways so that needs looking into. We usually just fly into the Med somewhere and bus/taxi/trip around to see things. We don't ski or hike the mountain trails so looking at a leisurely bumble around on trains, taking in the sights/sites and hopefully decent beer.
Since its for the Wifes birthday, bucket list and she's the boss (and says I talk [type?] too much these days) I suppose what I need to ask amongst all this is any village recommendations after heading North on the Bernina Express, that can be reached preferably by rail? Any and all alternative itineraries appreciated.

P.S. 3-0 to the Boro tonight.

We went with Shearings to Lake Como .We were picked up in Boro and night in France both ways.Stayed at Lake Como in all inclusive deal .Paid for excursion son the Glaciar express .on it for 4 hours and then free time in St Moritz .Did another day trip out with them to Milan. You will also find this holiday in a lot of Womens weekly magazines.

Check the weather is my advice as we did in thick fog sadly couldn’t see a thing

Thankfully I’ve done it twice but the fog sets in

How was the Glacier Express mate, was it worth it? Don't know much about that one.

Jedi, could you check the weather in the Alps for June please in your crystal ball 😆.
I guess it's just pot luck with the weather. Is it chilly at those altitudes in the summer? What time of year did you go?

Arosa is a pretty village, an hour by train up the hill from Chur. Its not far mileage wise but quite a gradient and great views. In winter its a ski resort. Summer it has 2 lakes (well they are there all year to be fair ;) )but better for swimming in the summer, mountain views, walking trails - you can grab a cable car up lunch at a mountain restaurant and walk down etc.

Should be pleasantly warm in the sunshine, temp can drop in the evening, pack a jumper.

top tip

buy a second class ticket and then go for a long coffee in the observation car. Its free and and has rooftop glass windows.

Even better tip.

Buy a tagesKarte from one of the gemeindes for 45 chf and you can travel the whole of switzerland for a day

It will save you hundreds per person

I'm a travel agent and have booked lots of European train trips, so do feel free to drop me a line for more info. The two key ways of doing a European trip are via interrail or booking ordinary advance tickets, but that does depend on the country (basically anything South or East of Belgium is pretty good for interrail, Italy and France less so) and how far you're travelling each day. For example, one of my clients did Milan-Lake Como and it's only 5 or so euros for an ordinary ticket, so definitely not worth wasting an interrail day on that!

The continental railways are generally of an excellent standard - the quality in first class (which can actually mean just one up from standard, because they have business executive and sometimes higher) makes our railways look abysmal!

I would also highly recommend you read the Man in Seat 61 who will give you more info than you will possibly need to plan your route!
