Ben Houchen set for 74% payrise

Surprised how low the wage is, what attracted him to the role, aswith most tories the chance to make real money without too much hard work.
It's what they excel at.
How they get the working classes to vote for them is a mystery

He is one of the working class if thats his wage.............................................but if you believe that  :eek::eek:

Seems like he is massively underpaid when compared to his peers in other regions. This is more a correction to bring him in line with others doing a similar job. That been said the timing with people struggling and many on furlough it doesn’t feel like a good time to be announcing this.

Blimey I know it’s difficult to request you put politics apart because essentially his work involves all sorts of political spines , but why can’t people measure him on his performance and not like Coluka eloquently says , the colour of his rosette ?

Teesside was mentioned three times on separate awards at the Chancellors budget with a public pat on the back for him and he’s literally been instrumental in breathing new life into an industrial wilderness .

In the private sector he now has enough of a CV to reap a six figure salary , with bonuses added on top of that .

Then that's where he should head.

You spelt overpaid wrongly

What are other mayors on and are they all on the take?
£9300 is what the Stockton mayor receives. It's been frozen since 2013. An independent panel suggested an increase, Stockton Borough knocked it back because it wasn't right for them to get an increase when people's pay across the country was being hit.

I'm still waiting to hear what Houchen's responsibilities are. Some foolishly think that being mentioned in parliament is down to him. Is our electorate really so gullible?

Stockton mayor is not a metro mayor. What are the wages of other metro mayors?

Regardless of whether you think he's been directly responsible for bringing investment to the area, or whether he tries to seek the reflected credit for other peoples hard work, the most irritating thing for me is that a Labour mayor would not have been given 1% of the 'support' that he has.

Politics and local authorities should simply not be mixed. His actions are not primarily driven by a selfless desire to better Teesside, but to further his own political career.

Anyone who thinks Houtchen saw a £37k job and thought to himself 'feck yeah, minted!" must be brain damaged.

The Tory MO is to profit from directing public monies to their contacts and taking a cut. Their relatives or 'associates' will have beneficial interests in projects which they give tax payers' money to. It used to be called corruption. Now it is called business as usual.

That one in Middlesbrough has dozens of properties scattered across the area. Guess who makes the money when the land is developed?

As someone posted above, Houtchen has a string of dissolved companies in his wake. I wonder if any of them actually did any productive business. And that's not even including the VAT fraud company. Houtchen denies any involvement in that yet he was mentioned twice in the case judgement. That is Boris Johnson level of mis-information.

The issue of pay is that these roles are evolutionary. So at the time the 5 councils that make up the metro area will have taken independent legal counsel on what the pay should be based on the role and responsibility. This is regularly reviewed and the roles have already changed a lot from when they were first envisioned in 2011. We can’t compare one area to another in a blanket way. Greater Manchester for example has a lot of devolved decisions which include the police and hospitals. So although also a metro mayor we can’t compare the two roles. When they first created these roles they were very mindful of pay levels and definitely under valued the role.

IMO the role is vital to the area and should be paid accordingly. I would prefer they pay for the office as a whole and the mayor can decide how much of their own budget they can spend on their own wage and how much on the comms team etc. it is incredibly frustrating when these roles increase the “office of mayor” size and then also increase the council tax precepts.
