Ben Houchen set for 74% payrise

What is he actually responsible for?

I know the local authorities have responsibility for much going on in local life but what responsibility rests with the mayor's office?

I was on more than that with nowhere near that level of responsibility. I do think we need to properly assess the value of such posts. The fact a Tory is currently in post should be irrelevant. The pay level is not about party politics, it is about responsibility. The proposed pay seems fair to me, I thought it would be above £100K in truth

I don’t know what other interests he has or whether the role of mayor uses up his full time, but I’d definitely say as a role he has more responsibility than someone in the private sector on £37k p/a
What attracted him to the 37k role in the first place? Passion for the area doesn’t put bread on the table 🤔

I have no idea whatsoever. I haven’t lived in the area for 15 years, apart from visiting my parents, so other than headline stuff I don’t know the ins and outs.

I suppose he either has grand idea of what he can achieve in the Cons, cares about the area or it was a good financial op based on his previous situation:

I don’t know his background, but there’s plenty of people who take up a cause they feel for because they have the financial backing from family to do so.

CtC, I suggest you email the authorities and ask for a copy of his job description and job evaluation. Leadership roles generally attract much higher pay than that. I bet the leader of a big organisation like say Thirteen group is on at least 50% more than the upgrade salary for mayor. You may not like him or his politics which in fairness neither do i, but the job is the job and would be the same for any coloured rosette holder.

If anybody on here thinks he takes home £37000 they must be dafter than I ever could imagine.

Just look at the companies he has been invloved in where he has resigned or/and the company has been disolved. These are all within 6 years FFS

I was asking because I thought you knew after your statement above.

I'm not sure what budget the authority has compared to say, Stockton Borough, who also have a mayor, to compare recompense between the two.

I know he gets lots of publicity but that's a politically motivated job being done by the Gazette and Northern Echo.

The original pay for the mayor of £37k was decided by the 5 councils who agreed to the formation of the combined authority. It was accepted that the "new" mayor in reality had very little responsibility, the 5 council leaders have much more and the £37k was decided after working out an average of the local authorities leaders allowances.

So yes, it's a disgrace, can you imagine the outcry if one of the leaders of one of the local authorities got an increase of 70+%. Indeed most local politicians agreed since 2008 that the increase will never be more than the local authority workforce get. Now we have Tories in charge this is changing quicker than you can type an excuse for them on here.
