BBC Sports Personality of the year

Well exactly, so he won it in 2011 when he won loads.

I've made my feelings on SPOTY known on here before. Why do some people act like it's the pinnacle of an athletes career rather than a popularity contest akin to Strictly Come Dancing - it infuriates me no end.

However, the Cavendish story isn't just about him winning a stage of the TDF in 2024, nor even beating Merckx's record, but a redemption arc involving depression, Epstein Barr virus and being written off by multiple people both within and outside the sport - it's a testament to his single mindedness and ability to bounce back multiple times in pursuit of a goal.

It's exactly the sort of thing that defines a "sports personality".

He inspires me, he is a true legend and should stay well clear of this pointless "trophy"

Remember when Ryan Giggs won it once, basically because he was old (relatively for a fooballer)

That was a joke but is, in a way, why I don't think Cav should win it. It should about what he's achieved this year, not what he's achieved in other years.

See my post above, what he's achieved this year needs to be put into the context of what has gone before.

To win one stage of the TDF makes a riders career, he's won 35 of them, but ignoring that, to win a stage of the greatest sporting event in the world after what he's gone through is amazing.

I'm afraid it hasn't been about "personality" for many a year - as alluded to above, it's now about who can motivate the most social media followers to vote for them.

As soon as you let the public choose the winner, all objectivity is lost
But wasn't it always like this? I know social media wasn't a factor but even if it was decided by a panel, it can never be entirely objective.

Darts is no more a sport than fuc.king skittles or dominoes. It is a game.
Littler might be magic but how they could they suggest him as a 'sports personality' with that gut at his age? Hardly a role model.
Absolutely, it should be in the criteria that only thin people are allowed to win it.
