Baseball in NYC

We're off to New York in a few weeks, New York Mets are playing Washington Nationals 3 nights in a row, is that a thing as I don't really follow baseball but fancy taking in a game. Where's the best place to sit and are tickets really cheap - found some that are $14 each ... Or there's preseason ice hockey at Madison Square Garden ...

Yes baseball is a long season about 160 odd games before the play offs ( starts in October)

They play a series of 3 to 5 games v the same team at a time and each game is a different starting pitcher they rotate them over the season.

Your going to the last games of the regular season

So things might be different as they keep key players back for the post season if they are comfortable.

Also New York Yankees are available to go to at Yankee Stadium located in The Bronx.

New York Knicks basketball will be in pre season in a few weeks. They share Maddison Square Garden with the New York Rangers ice hockey.

New York Giants NFL team will be at home on 26 September and 2nd October.

Go and see the Mets - baseball is a superb spectator sport and Citi Field is wonderful! But if you actually want to watch and follow the game properly, my tips are to a) get as near as possible to the front of your section and b) don't put an aisle inbetween yourself and the action. Americans are terrible at sitting still and watching sport - they're up and down constantly to get food and drinks (it seems the game itself comes a distant second to eating and drinking) so your view will be constantly blocked by people walking back and forth if you don't take my advice!

To be fair one of my reasons to go is for a beer and a hot dog 😉

Best way to watch the game

Be aware though…

Nowadays, there’s an alcohol cutoff. Whether it’d be last out in the bottom of the 7th inning, middle of the 8th, 2 hours after first pitch or whenever. The league for years now has imposed some sort of guidelines where a ballpark must have some sort cutoff time that would halt alcohol sales in an effort to give fans an opportunity to “sober up” before the game ends. This even includes if the fan takes their last sip of beer then immediately proceeds to walk out to his/her car (wow, so much for a cutoff time).

Don't do the pre-season hockey (or rather don't miss the baseball to do the hockey instead).

Mets are a very good team this year and sadly the Nats are awful (I lived in DC for a while and it is sad to see their demise). Stubhub, Seat Geek and Vivid Seats are often cheaper ways to get tickets (but for 14 bucks you can't go wrong!)

I know, I know - I'm an anomaly. Beer and hot dogs are great, but when I go to watch any sport, I go to watch the sport, and I can quite easily go without eating and drinking for a few hours, especially considering the prices. Most nights I'm sure I'm the only fan in the ballpark who doesn't miss a single pitch, and I'm exactly the same at football or cricket.

I'm like that with footy but my thinking is that if you're there you may as well get the full experience 😃

I went to see the Mets three years ago. There might be some info of use in the blog post I did if you can wade through the earlier guff.

The bit about the pitcher batting doesn't apply now as both leagues now use pinch hitters.
