Base Camp to close

Noooooooo. This is truly terrible news on a grand scale. Is this partly because of the development of Exchange Square and landlords thinking they can get bigger brands in to fill the spaces? Or is this a sign that Exchange Square will continue to rot and lay fallow for years to come?

😞

I think it's the former...don't think BC know if they will be there long term, judging by their Instagram post, so can't continue to plough money into a building they may lose

Thanks. Still sad to lose an independent facility to be replaced by no doubt a corporate restaurant chain of some kind.

Bad area of town for anything to take off. Uncle Alberts was a class venue.. not that bothered about Base Camp tbf

Disappointing, but it's an awful location. Will be a blessing if they can move somewhere else. Not as if there's a shortage of empty buildings in Boro.

Not really sure why people think it is an isolated spot. 1 minute from Railway Station, 5 minutes from Bus Station easy parking close by. That said although I go to lots of gigs I have only been to one gig there The Wedding Present. The sound was diabolical(although I am told by others it was ok so maybe just were I was standing), they had no beer whatsoever then and only dark fruit cider. So having nothing to drink I went back to the Avalanche Party show at The Westgarth. I love the Wedding Present as well.
Been a couple of times prematch and at least you can get a bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale now although not great thing to drink all day.
I would have went to more gigs as they have had some good stuff on but a lot clashed with Boro games.

Sad to see the place closing been to loads of venues even smaller than this that seem to work. But I suppose if it is not supported(and I include myself) its going to die. Other venues are struggling and I was speaking to someone about The Westgarth recently and I can see that going down the line.

It would be nice if the owners could develop Base Camp in another venue in the Boro.

The current location is not ideal - say using PART of one the closed retail outlets.

We were only there once and weren't particularly impressed with what was in offer as far as refreshments went, nor the venue itself.

Hopefully they'll find a space to settle into properly and develop as their own, somewhere more central perhaps.

Exchange Square is next to the railway station but it's hardly central to Boro's nightlife.

People won't use a facility on there doorstep but will spend £75 on a ticket (and the rest of costs, travelling etc) on financing Jarvis Cocker's pension fund.
Plenty of people support local businesses and venues but the finances only stretch so far in an area that is far from affluent at the best of times, never mind during a major cost of living crisis.

A few have already mentioned being disappointed with the venue, and the location, and I don’t think it’s been well advertised. I went to see The Wedding Present there but hadn’t heard of the place when a mate asked if I fancied it and I am a keen local gig goer.

Off the top of my head there is a fair few music venues putting on good shows to compete with….Westgarth, Town Hall, Georgian, Globe, Ku, story tellers, empire/theatre, waiting room, the arc, NE Volume Bar.

Seems a bit odd to criticise people who want to go see a once in a blue moon reunion of a brilliant band and link that with the demise of a local venue when many of them will be local gig goers anyway.

Mainly because of energy costs rising by 400% and the possible sale of building.

Sad to hear 😞
