Barry Bannan

I often agree with you Marv on players, but while I don't desperately want to sign Bannan, he is a much better footballer than Saville.

Grant Hanley has played for Scotland over 30 times. Their standard is terrible.

Bannan was also part of a team that was relegated last season.
Deducted points and were not paid on time had something to do it. They were a mess at times as a club which was not BB's fault.

I agree Scotland are not a high standard but are they any worse than say Northern Ireland?

I just think there is a bit of nice quality there and a player who must be keen to move and a club that have to move him on.

He maybe 31 and he may be short - but to me he''ll definitly hurt the opposition.

Better player than George Saville could ever dream of being . Being good isn't all about the number of goals you score. Controls the game with his passing & always seems to have more time than anyone else on the pitch , which is the sign of a good player in my book . Agree it's too late for him in the PL , but he would be a real asset to any side in the championship. In my opinion of course .
Completely agree with this...good post 👍

He’s the exact type of player we don’t need. He’s well past his best. He has no residual value. He rarely scores. He’s slow.

Sorry, I respect your opinion, but I complete disagree.

IMO he’s been a bog standard championship player during his career who has never been good enough for that next level.

And IMO, Scotland are worse than Northern Ireland. Especially during the time of when Bannan was getting his odd caps from time to time.

I am surprised we have not been linked with Bannan this Summer. He is too definitely too good for Division 1 and Sheff Wed must be under financial pressure to raise some cash. I suspect he's on a good wage as no clubs have made bids for him. He also mean SW may struggle to pay his wages all next season. He is always SW's best player when we play them.
Yes I liked him when we played em in NW's 1st season, we won 2-0, he was dictating the game for Sheff Weds back then, good footballer

Personally wouldn’t be signing him as we are going to be well stocked for midfielders once Payero signs. But he’s a very good championship footballer and suits possession based teams, would be a good signing for someone like Swansea for a couple of seasons. Don’t get the comparison to Saville, completely different players.

I'd assumed Lewis Wing would go if we signed him.

Slow? - wow - I think we watch a different game - many of his reactions/touchs are very quick. Its not just about sprinting. He played every game last season how many Boro players managed that.

31 is not young, but most on the Board want Bolasie and he's 32. Our squad overall is probably a bit younger than most teams.

As a Sheffield United fan, Warnock would rather see Wednesday relegated again, rather than helping them financially by buying Bannan.

I don’t mean slow by pace because it’s obvious he’s not quick. I mean with recycling the ball and moving it forward. He’s slow in the build up.

And I wouldn’t say most of the board want Bolasie. I think it’s quite mixed from some of the threads/comments I’ve seen/read.

Oh and as for the comparison between him and Saville - they’re both midfielders but obviously different type of midfielder. I merely said I’d rather keep Saville than sign Bannan because we’ve lost Saville from our midfield.

Like I said previously. He’s 31 years old. Passed his best (and his best wasn’t even that great - especially if you want to challenge for promotion). No residual value. And bottom line is, he wouldn’t improve us, so it would be a poor signing for us and a waste of good money.

I'm stunned people think Sav is better 😂. Have they ever watched Bannan?

I grant you Savs younger and probably got more legs. I'm not saying I would have Bannan 'now' but I'd have a 27 year Bannan ahead of a 27 year old Sav anyday.

Did we ever find out how much we got for Sav? Just seems to have been overlooked.....not even an undisclosed fee.

I will inform the Brentford and Swansea scouting teams, as they are interested in buying him. ;)

Even if he managed to bag a premier league move (even Jason Steele managed a similar miracle!), he’d be lucky to start games. And if he did, then Brentford would be hurtling back towards the championship at an alarming rate.

Also, him being ‘linked’ to Brentford/Swansea could well be paper tosh, like a vast amount of ‘paper links’ are.

There’s no surprise he’s rarely been part of a squad that’s been fighting for promotion. I believe there’s only been one, and that was when Sheff Wed finished 4th?

If I was to give an example of a bog standard solid championship player - then Barry Bannan would be high on that list. He’s better than a team fighting for relegation in this division - but he’s not good enough to be pushing for promotion.

It looks like he could be available for around £1m, so looking at someone like Derby, they could probably do a lot worse (and they probably will 😆). However for us, he wouldn’t improve us so £1m plus wages at 31 years old would be a waste of money IMO.

It’s very short sighted to judge a player on team performances. Bannan is well above “bang average” in this league. Consistently dictates games from deep and his set pieces are very good.

The one thing I would say is, we are pretty well stocked in that area of the pitch now so probs shouldn’t be a priority. Would be a replacement for howson, if anyone. Certainly not saville!
