Barlaser

Ok. Here's last night's extended match highlights. Imagine I'm Gary Neville :ROFLMAO: on Barlaser watch. This is how he calmly links play.

Approximate timings on youtube timeline

40 secs - pass to O'Brien

1:15 - the move. Goes wide right to receive and link

1:47 - goes left to receive throw and link play

4:25 - simple ball to Silvera

4:45 - picks up loose ball, moves it, stays available then lovely ball towards Rogers

5:58 - helps set up goal move

6:42 - watch his involvement and deft pass to McGree

7:12 - free kick (not too far oof

7:30 in the move for O'Brien effort

From 8:03 makes himself available then intelligent pass

If he can step up to linking play like that against better teams, we have a winner.

He did Glover a lot of favours last night , as he's obviously not as comfortable with ball at his feet.
Best way I can think to describe it is as 'manipulating space ' so we could still play out from the back .

As Carrick said, he's good at making time and space for himself (and others). I just hope we see that against more aggressively pressing teams. We really have to adapt our game when Glover is in Goal... he's not a bad keeper, but he's not a footballer like Steffen.

Excellent in a midfield three, whether an attacking 4-3-3 where he is the furthest back or in 3-5-2 type set up. Looks to struggle when playing in 2. It looks like we thought we could coach into being a defensive playmaker - (a Carrick clone) - but he's clearly struggled to adapt to the defensive side of it.

Hackney's very much a ball-carrying, box-to-box type and does need someone next to him who can sit. One of the problems we've had this season is requiring Hackney to do a lot of defensive work which is something he's not great at. I'm not overly convinced with O'Brien as a partner for Hackney because he has the same strengths and they a feel a bit Lampard and Gerrard. That said, O'Brien was used a bit more defensively in his last season with Huddersfield so it might work out.
Hackney & O'Brien.. I think are more like young Jonny Howson (Hackney) and Adam Forshaw (O'Brien) although O'Brien if more like a Leeds era Forshaw ie more developed and Hackney naturally is the younger of the pairing. In the cup we can afford to be a little slower and a little looser with Barlaser in a central deeper role.

Obviously, neither are in the same league but, when Howson bows out.... or is rested (bless his aged socks), you could play hackney and Barlaser in the same way that Man Utd played Butt and Scholes. Scholes was, like Barlaser, not quick, but he was able to make and use space. Hackney has the bite and spite of Butt, as well as the goals...and is probably more attacking minded.

I think Hackney is far more skilful than Barlaser, is a better passer who actually opens teams up. He is a much better tackler and has more presence. He is also more of a goal threat. I'd be comparing Hackney more to Scholes than I would Barlaser. Hayden is already levels above Barlaser.
We don't have a Butt (who didn't score goals anyway) or a firebrand midfielder. O'Brien would be the nearest thing to that of our lot.

nah.

Hackney would not be that Nicky Butt player.. Jack Stott maybe.

Dan Barlaser isn't Paul Scholes.. Jacob Butterfield maybe

you could play Hackney and Barlaser in the same way we played Leadbitter and Butterfiled.. in that we sold him in order to pay for a defensive midfielder.

Ben Sheaf from Coventry 100%

Yawn

I believe I was the first person on here to suggest we might sign him, (I'm hoping for a blue Peter badge). I've always thought he was an ideal player for us, definitely still do.

Been extremely good for 3-4 games, needs to keep it up.

Be good if he rediscovers his assist form he had at Rotherham 👍
