I always recall people getting irate with Lennie Lawrence after Alan Moore started like a storm for our newly relegated side. Why didn't you play him (the new Ryan Giggs) last season to keep us up. I think Lennie's reply was lost in all the noise... but basically he was 17 years old., the season before in the top flight would have been too much too soon.

I said at the time that it was clear Balogun had talent but he had spent all his time playing against kids. He was struggling with adapting to playing against men and that was always going to come. I think he had fallen out with Wilder, no surprise there, otherwise I think he could have been great in a 2nd season with us.

Fans on here said he had potential, but he was not good enough as a forward for us at the time.
I did want him back last season, but I think I was in a minority - posters would tell me he failed to score at the Riverside.
It is difficult to look into the future. To me he was always quick and skillful, but at te time didn'y have what I call strikers instinct for being in the right place at the right time.

I think sometimes our fans see a poor run of form and think the player is terrible for ever or they will "never play that position"
In all honesty alot of footballers find their place in their early to mid 20s when it clicks with a good run of form in a team that suits them.
I think Akpom would be fine playing up front now - it was not just playing the 10 that led to his great season - his form just clicked.

I remember he scored a couple here, got a hatrick with england u21s and seemed to be gathering some good form and confidence and wilder stopped playing him. You could see he was raw but had skills. Im sure he would do better if was in this team under carrick. But for all his current value i dont think he has score 1 premier league goal yet.
