Ballon D'or

Haaland?

Is it just voted on by players, or are there criteria they have to meet? As a domestic/league player he really doesn't deserve it, does guiding Argentina to the World Cup make him the absolute best player in world football over the last year?

Messi about to win his 8th Ballon D'or, surely there's other players more worthy this year who deserve to win it?

Who?
Remembering that it's including the World Cup etc.

Haaland is the only one I'd say would be in the conversation across the last year, and I think it's undeniable how reliant he is on service.

He's the best goalscorer, not the best player.

The Ballon d'Or is decided by 100 journalists from FIFA's 100 top-ranked member nations. Each journalist makes their top five picks from the 30-man shortlist, with each ranking earning a different points value/number of votes.
  • First: Six points
  • Second: Four points
  • Third: Three points
  • Fourth: Two points
  • Fifth: One point
Player with most points wins

Surely it has to be either Haaland (most goals ever scored in the premier league, won the treble, European golden boot) or Mbappe (hat trick in the World Cup final?)
massive Lionel Messi fan, i always side with him over Ronaldo, but playing half of the calendar year in America surely cannot be ignored just because he won a World Cup?
Granted he did almost win it singlehandedly for Argentina
Haaland for me👍

What's the one where three (maybe?) players from each club vote then? Or did they change it?

2 penalties in a World Cup final, which I think is overlooked when people rave about the hat-trick, though the open play goal was quality.

No real reason it should be Mbappe if you're discounting Messi's World Cup too.

It's his PSG season that's mainly under consideration, 21 goals and 20 assists in 41 games, on top of what he did for Argentina.

Haaland was heavily reliant on other players for his goals, as prolific and brilliant as he's been, he was virtually anonymous in the semi-finals and finals of that treble.

So what you are saying is it should be Chuba (y)

What criteria are used to vote on players?

The media members receive a list of the finalists to choose from and make their selections from that select group of candidates.

In the past a player's overall career performance was taken into account by the voters. That allowed for a player like Messi to win in 2021 despite having inferior numbers to Lewandowski. The body of work throughout Messi's career helped him stand above even Lewandowski.

Recognizing this flaw in the criteria, France Football made changes, asking voters to take into account the following three aspects for every player:

  1. Individual performance in previous season (no longer by calendar year)
  2. Team success during the previous season
  3. Player behavior and fair play during season in consideration
The stricter parameters should ensure the player who performs at an elite level and helps their team win silverware will earn the recognition they deserve more often than not.

I don’t think Messi did win the World Cup “single handedly” and I don’t think he should win the ballon d’or since he has been semi-retired since May. He also did nowt from January until then.

I don’t think Mbappe should win it either.

"Nowt".

There's another goal in January that didn't fit in the screenshot too.
