Ayresome Park in the 40s

You say 1940s - was this after WWII? If so look at the lack of bomb damage. It always intrigues me how little bombing there was in Middlesbrough compared to Hull.

I understood that a lot of the images this week were actually taken during WW2 by USAAF pilots practising photo reconnaissance over Blighty before hopping over the channel to do it with people shooting at them? I tried to get on the site then and it appeared to have been overwhelmed so I shall be having a good rummage later on.

The East End terrace looks immense, how many did it hold before seats were put in for the 66 World Cup? Not sure I’ve ever seen any pictures of it full of spectators before seating and the roof going on.

Just checked on Gmaps. The rectangle in Albert Park is the roller skating rink because the tennis courts are now on the mini golf course. Took my future wife there in 1974, my debut on skates. She couldn't skate for laughing I couldn't skate cos I couldn't.
And yet she still married me! As the song goes "Isn't life strange"

When I was a teenager I used to try different ways down the terraced streets to get back to the station instead of going down Linthorpe Road. As you can see it was really tricky and I got lost once and ended up halfway down Newport Road.

The east end terrace had a capacity of 20k in the postwar period.

If anyone owns a copy of the Ayresome Park Memories book, it's in there.

This picture is from the 50s I think
