Ayling

He did alright against the best player in the league, he got outran a few times but who doesn't against Clarke? Won't be many weeks you're up against someone of that pace/quality.

Maybe he can be next years backup option, squad player like Tommy Smith was meant to be and we bring in someone with pace. He needs Jones in front of him, someone quick who isn't afraid of getting back and often Jones' defensive work is taken for granted.

Who scored gave Ayling 6.2 yesterday. Only Greenwood and Burstow scored lower of the 22 starters. Engel meanwhile scored 7.5, which was only bettered by Forss with 7.7.

Ayling's pass success rate was 77% compared to 89% from Engel, who saw a lot more of the ball and made 3 key passes to 2.

Ayling attempted 1 tackle and was unsuccessful. Engel attempted 5 tackles and was successful 4 times, both leading numbers from either side.

Also no player made more interceptions (3) than Engel, whilst Ayling made none.

I'm not having a go at Ayling, but he had a difficult afternoon up against Sunderland's best player. On the other side, Engel had the handicap of a first half booking but he was still better offensively and defensively. Yet he gets unfairly blamed for the goal conceded whilst Ayling gets praised even though he was far more culpable for the equaliser. Strange how people see what they want to see.
