As a student, I watched the BBC series 3 and 4, plus the specials in Bangkok at the end.

I've been meaning to watch the original 2 ITV series for years, like literally about 15 years, and just discovered they're all on ITVX, so watched the first one last night.

Interesting to watch back. Plenty of not-very-woke stuff ;) . But some funny one-liners as well.

What is it with you eh?....I mean your nuts ain't ganna gan rusty doon here are they?...I mean you've got Spanish boilers, French tarts, German tarts, Swedish tarts, Danish tarts, British tarts.....from Malaga to Gibraltar it's wall to wall totty..........So why Vicki eh?.......Is it the danger?.....Does the thought of your knees getting shattered give you a great big bonk on or summat?........."

Thank you. I'd forgotten all about this downloading whilst on hold (30 minutes and counting) to Aviva.

First two series are absolute classics. Lost count of the number of times I've watched them👍
Its only worth watching the first two I reckon. Watched the Boro one when it was originally on but never seen it since (or any of the series after that.

As a side note, ITVX is horrendous!

Wasn't it based on the ideas of a Stockton bricklayer (Mike Connell) after his experiences in Germany and a play written by him and Franc Roddom (Teessider and producer of Quadrophenia) . Ian La Frenais and d*ck Clement are the credited writers but it wasn't their idea.

Not sure who it was based on but it was definitely mentioned it was about Teesside contractors.

A bit of Auf trivia.
After the hut burnt down, the set at Elstree was cleared and reused for the Eastenders set.
And the other pub in the Eastenders early days was called The Dagmar....named for Dennis's German girlfriend who worked in the site office played by Brigitte Kahn.
