Atletico Madrid.

I must have seen AM over 100 times, the nicest decent true footballing supporters you will ever meet. They really are like the Boro, amazed when they win anything and not the end of the world if they don't.

The difference between them and the Show Business crew down the road is immense.

Went to Madrid 4 years ago on a rare weekend when both they and Real were at home.
Saturday and a trip to Atletico v Girona in their new, if slightly unfinished looking stadium.
1-0 up and in no rush to score again then Girona equalize, no plan B, finished 1-1, was awful to watch.
Next day Deportivo take an early lead in the Bernabau and Real really turn it on scoring 7! Bale was outstanding grabbing a brace as did Ronaldo.
Both were playing lower midtable teams but only Real wanted to entertain the fans.

I think that's right, AM fans are like us, they love a win, 442 , 451, 811, they don't care.

I am not sure where the new ground is as that opened after I stopped working there.

They will play exactly the same way & wait..... Its what they do
Not necessarily, a slightly tired cliché these days echoed by the commentators last night. They have generally become more "open" over the last couple of seasons, scoring more but conceding more in the process. I can 100% understand them at adapting that style away at City last night, the best team in Europe.

I think they'll play more on the front foot at home, not much more because at the moment they have only a 1 goal deficit to "protect" but if they score first it should be a hell of a match.

I think you maybe right.

In England, the way football is played seems to be very important to the new modern fan.

I think that's also a reason why no bigger club has taken Dyche from Burnley.

Everton would have no problem staying up if they had someone like Dyche in charge, instead they hired Lampard because he'll try and play 'better' football....even though we all know Dyche is a far, far superior manager than Lampard when it comes to getting results.

The likes of Sam Allardyce, Sean Dyche, Diego Simeone as managers with their methods are fast being erased from football because even though they may get results, their performances aren't great and the media/pundits/fans want both.
Totally agree, football 'fans' these days want attractive football more than ever and are less tolerant to, well, pretty much everything.

You do realise that football is an "entertainment"? A frippery, a distraction between birth and death. Or do you subscribe to the Bill Shankly nonsense
Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.

Do you go to see boring films where nothing happens? Do you like music which is just a dull drone or paintings of blank canvas? Unfunny comedians? Yes, there is a sporting contest to be eked out but if AM had been performing in front of Nero in the Colosseum I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have been collecting their wooden swords. Make football boring and people will find other things to do.

Nothing attractive about AM last night though. I thought they went into Grealish from the very moment he stepped onto the field was everything about AMs manager you wanted to know.

Football is a competitive sport first and foremost (for me anyway) and entertainment is very much secondary.

One of the ways in which I enjoy football as entertainment is the differing approaches of coaches and teams in trying to win the match. Then again, I was supportive of Pulis' stint at Boro so I may be in the minority!

Chess is competitive, but I don't care to watch it.
Exactly, that kind of proves my point. The sport happens regardless of the inherent "entertainment" value.

If the tables were turned Boro would still be playing Fulham tonight but likely on a ploughed field in South Bank with no one in attendance.

Exactly this. Cynical team, who roll about on the floor when they haven’t been touched then work in twos and threes with nudges in the back and sly kicks to try to get the opponent sent off.

To give them a bit of credit, I don’t think they go that defensive ordinarily. They’re conceding over a goal a game in La Liga, and about 1.5 per game away from home.

Last night was terrible though. Fair enough sit deep and look to pinch one on the break, but for the majority of the game they played for 0-0.

I watched it and it was quite interesting for about 10 minutes, and then it got incredibly stale.

Of course, I also realise that smaller clubs have to accept a degree of pragmstism too, if they want to compete with better resourced clubs.

In fact, if argue all clubs have to find the balance between solidity and open, attacking football.
