Assombalonga - Skipper for the season

It's looking distinctly likely that Britt could and probably will leave for nothing next summer. I don't see us matching or improving his current contract.

That's a bit depressing. The same could be said of Fletcher🙁

At one point I was adamant we needed to sell him during this window, even if we only get £4-5m for him but if he is planning on leaving once his contract's up it could work in our favour, as he'll be desperate to have a good season so that he can attract clubs.

If he has his best season for us yet, scores 20+ goals and we get promoted we will be in a position where we'll be able to afford to offer him a new contract.

Thought process could be along the lines off..

I could get £4/5 mil for him now.

Or..

Make him captain and he has a great season and fires us to the prem, he would want to stay and we could afford him a new deal.

Or..

Make him captain and he had a great season but we don’t quite get promoted,Gibbo may be willing to push the boat out for a new deal / Britt may be happy to stay even if slightly reduced contract on the basis that he doesn’t wanna risk going to a new club if we are looking like one of the top teams for the following season therefore giving him a chance to get promoted.

Or..

If he scores 10-12 goals between now and Jan and is looking on fire, but we are looking like play offs at best, and negotiations with Britt aren’t going well, a team pushing for automatic or relegation from the prem could be willing to spend £4/5m on him anyway to either get promoted to the prem or prevent relegation from the prem but then at least we’ve had half a season and 10 goals from him.

I don't see many Champ clubs doing so tbh. He'll have to go to Qatar or take a pay cut, unless he has a fantastic season and the PL clubs come sniffing around, which has to be a good thing for us.

We all know Britt is capable of 20 league goals, maybe this is the push he needs.

I'm not sure we all know Assombolonga is capable of 20 league goals - he has got nowhere near in this league yet in 6 seasons.

I felt Britt could have given a bit more at times under Woody and even under Pulis. Warnock's first game at Stoke, what a difference from him, when we didn't have the ball and from Fletcher. Britt looked more hungry. I don't think there is any harm in giving Britt the armband and see how he and the team does.

His career Championship average is a goal every 180 minutes. For us its slightly worse, every 208 minutes.

He is now captain, so in a world where the captain is almost always on the pitch, we should expect something like 20 goals if he avoids injury, significant suspensions, or significant loss of form and stops being picked. That's also working off the assumption that being captain won't 'improve' his goal return. If it does, we could maybe expect more than 20.

Also, I wouldn't say 14 goals is THAT far off 20, given he's achieved that four times out of six seasons, 3 of which included lengthy injuries. Admittedly he didn't have a great season last year, but neither did anyone in the team with a complete dud as manager. He finished the season well and he's had a good pre-season. Let's build them up not knock them down(y)

What do you consider 'near'?

I'm his 3 seasons here...

15 when he was on 12 Pre Pulis who didn't fancy him, 14 when Pulis preferred Hugill for a large part of the season and 11 when injured for a chunk of the season

I think he would have got 20 in his first 2 seasons without Pulis being manage - but we'll never know

You'd hope people would back the new mangers decision for now

He cost £15m and gets paid an absolute fortune.
He is so good nobody has expressed interest in signing him in his final year.

His best season is 15 league goals in his 6 seasons in the championship.

I hope the optimists are right. I am just being realistic.

All I was doing was trying to was thinking of reasons why our manager ( who is excellent by the way) would pick him as captain. I think I have game some good possible reasons.

Well all we’re really saying is that a proven 15 goal a season striker should be capable of 20 if the manager plays him every week and knows how to get an extra 20% out of him.

I understand why people are wanting to be as positive as possible at the start of the new season and I am certainly not anti the manager at all.
I had hoped that both Assombolonga and Fletcher would have been sold, but am not really surprised given their wages and uninspiring records. I don't suppose he is either. I also get why he will talk them up given he is stuck with them.
They both had lots of chances, they are just terrible finishers (both 1 in 5 attempts inside the 6 yard box).

I wouldn’t say either of them were terrible finishers.

How does that stat compare with other championship strikers?

Warnock rates them mate. I know you don’t but Warnock does for sure.
