Artists(pencil,paint,drawing) on here.

Just for pleasure now mate. I did do it for a while offering commissions but it really effected my mental health and made me ill as I put way way too much pressure on myself and aimed for unreasonable levels of perfection, I got the stage I would spend 10-12 hours on a drawing that I wasn't happy with it so would I rip it up and start again and charge about £30-40 to basically cover expenses and materials, it put me off drawing for a long time and I still haven't got the passion back for it that I had a few year back. I now just draw what I fancy when I'm in the mood for it and don't put the pressure on myself.
I know exactly what you mean. I struggle in the same way with the wood turning and aim for perfection before passing them on.

Now wood turning is a skill that interests me. I watch loads of YouTube videos on wood turning and it looks like a fantastic hobby. I don't have a lathe and the closest I have been to one is a metal turning lathe when I was a teen.
If I did ever get a lathe though most likely it would go alongside all my other creative hobbies that I take up, learn it to A level I am happy with then move on to the next one then come back to it in a year or twos time. My Mrs takes the mick about my obsessions with trying different arts and crafts, I'm trying to learn Calligraphy at the minute but also eyeing up leather craft tools 🤣. I always like to be learning something(preferably something new)but then I get bored quickly and move onto the next thing.

I am exactly the same.

I don't know if you have seen the picture of the coffee table I recently made, in the background is all my fishing gear covered in sawdust. 🤣 🤣 🤣

I am completely **** at art, all forms of it. Wish I wasn’t, but I am.
My younger brother was talented imo, and when he was 15ish he started skecthing things (mainly his heroes) and I thought he had a bit of natural talent but he never persevered with it. Anyway, these of his (from when he was 15) just came to mind -

I like them. He has a really good grasp of shadows and highlights. If I could recommend to anyone starting in art or wanting to improve then learning shadows and highlights really makes a difference. It can turn an average drawing into a good drawing by adding depth and elements of realism. Once I figured it out about highlights and shadows and practiced that my art came on no end, I actually learnt more about shadows and highlights by practicing doing 3d effect drawings and if I just want to have a bit of fun with a pencil and paper then that's what I still do(hence the love you 3d effect drawing).

I am utterly, utterly useless at art. All the artistic genes went to my sister, who is a professional illustrator (mainly of children's books). She struggles to make any money out of it, so if you're ever buying a children's book and are not sure which one, do consider one of hers (caveat - she's not a football fan - her only connection to the Boro apart from family hailing from there being she went to school with George Friend)

Are you from Barnstable?

One side of the family are. My sister left North Yorkshire at 16 and went there for sixth form. She's a few years older than him mind, she was in the same class as his older brother.
I spent a bit of time working in Appledore which isn't too far from Barnstaple. I played local football for the Bideford Blues and played at Barnstable's stadium.

Lovely village Appledore, good ice cream! I recall Tiverton Town having a hot streak in my childhood, team had scored 80 odd goals by the time of the FA Cup 1st round! Family dotted around Barnstaple/Braunton area, couple of Boro fans surprisingly.

Them illustrations are brilliant. I have an artists envy of people who can draw cartoons, comic illustrations and book illustrations. When I have tried previously I just can't get my head around it and end up with a mixture of A semi realistic looking cartoon abomination 😂. I even bought a book on it to try learn and ended up giving up with my attempts and gave the book to my 15 year old daughter.

The lad certainly has talent that he’s wasting, but when did “Tatou” play for Boro?

Yeah you can see he's got good skills. As a beginner you have to be prepared to stretch to tackling shadow, tone, form shapes and dimension. Drawing is much more than just scribing a line or a curve. Also creating the conditions to do it, I found I only produce any decent standard in a night school environment.

I completely agree with that. The other thing to add is blending and using the right tools for the job. With charcoal I will use various sized make up brushes as they give a really good soft natural toned. With graphite I use blending stumps for darker shading/blending and Q-tips for softer blending. For coloured pencil I use zest-it non toxic solvent and again a blending stumps or paint brush.
