Arteta's managerial assist

tripleheader

Where he assisted Arsenals 3rd goal in acting/thinking very quickly in running to a ball that had gone out of play over the touch line, picking up the ball, handing it to his player for a quick throw in. Something doesn't quite sit right with me, I don't think that this should be allowed.

Nothing wrong with it. It’s just the same as opposition managers and coaching staff keeping the ball when they get it to try and waste time or let their lads get back in to position. It’s quick and inventive and will always be a part of the game.

Arteta and Viera will both go on to have good careers as managers, despite both being written off very quickly

I respect your views but disagree. It's outside interference and unsporting as is coaching staff holding onto the ball etc. Win at all cost mentality don't like it...

i know where you're coming from, but i think its a bit different. Coaching staff wasting time is definitely unsporting (or cheating actually). Getting the ball back in play quickly though, im all for it. Too much fannying about wasting time in matches as it is.

Are ball boys effectively outside interference? Of course not. I dont think it really matters who retrieves the ball once its gone out of play. Whether its ball boys, subs, coaching staff etc. If someone retrieves it quicker than expected and the opposition have switched off, thats their fault. I dont see anything unsporting about it.

If he was outside the designated coaching area I am surprised the 4th official didn't at least notify the ref.

So at the Riverside recently we’ve had ball boys pitch side, then when we’ve gone into the lead we’ve pulled them off (oo-er) is that unsporting? Genuine question because I’m surprised it’s allowed.

How about changing the person being substituted, as we have done in the last two games now that’s probably unsporting behaviour.

To me the coaches are part of the game and the arsenal coaching staff should be praised for being alert and being switched on, great play and should be applauded and not derided. As someone has said earlier they were keeping the game moving not trying to waste time.

He was outside his coaching area, should have been given a yellow card.

They just get told to site behind the advertising boards rather than in front of them, its only similar to the long throw merchants having towels all over the place and convenient gaps in the boards for run ups as part of their home advantage.
