Are Derbyshire Police right to name and shame?

Derbyshire Police are taking a bit of flack for sharing drone footage of people out walking in the Peak District. Personally, I feel the police need to do everything in their powers to stop idiots going out, yet other think that it s'nanny policing.'

The following was taken from the BBC website:

Derbyshire Police filmed people in pairs rambling in the Curbar Edge area of the beauty spot on Wednesday.
Officers said travelling to remote areas for exercise did not count as "essential travel" as permitted under government lockdown rules.
But Twitter users said those shown in the film did not appear to be breaking social distancing guidelines.
The 90-second clip, shot by the force's drone unit, showed people walking their dogs and taking photos.
It said "the message is still not getting through" about stopping the spread of coronavirus, despite government guidance and several police posts.
One Twitter user called it "the worst kind of nanny policing" while others pointed out that the walkers were away from crowds.

Yes they should, it's like how loud do you need to shout
It could be OK that pair doing it, then son couple decide to drive to a remote spot, then someone else follows suit & so on & so on, lockdown means lockdown

Totally agree erimus. What if one of these had an accident and had to call the mountain rescue out and everything that entails. A simple Wal in a remote area is putting a lot of people at risk.

Seems like some copper in Derby who has a new drone to play with and didnt fancy walking the beat in downtown Derby where he might actually have to interact with the great unwashed general public.

Seems a bit much for me like, especially with all the town centre flouting of the guidelines.

I love walking and hiking but I wouldn't dream of driving over rose berry topping or anywhere like that. I'd go out on my bike as that doesn't involve car travel.

I think this is another example of the Government not being clear about what people can and can’t do. All the way through, they’ve tried to make it look like they’re asking not forcing people to be behave in certain ways, presumably because they don’t want to be unpopular.

All the PM said on Monday was that people could go outside for one form of exercise per day. Nothing about where or for how long or whether it was reasonable to drive somewhere first.

Even the ‘guidance’ they’ve made available is basically just a set of bullet points. It’s just a rehash of the PM’s speech to a large extent.

I think that either some of the police forces are interpreting this in a more draconian fashion from what the Government intended or, if that actually is what they intended, then the Government should be honest about it and own their own policy.

Name and shame them.. I want to go walking in the moors or to fly my drone..but guess what im not. Lovely weather for it as well. And so my idiot neighbours are out in the car yet again.. I told both of them to keep away from me the last 2 days..they really don't get it. Morons.

I wholeheartedly agree that it is not clear, but common sense to me would dictate that leaving the house for a piece of exercise would not entail driving to a local beauty spot. You are prolonging how long you are outside for massively by doing so.

I agree, but you can’t make public policy by relying on common sense. You find out very quickly that there is no such thing, certainly not something which is ‘common’ to all.

And this is probably the most important public policy in decades. I know they’re doing a lot of stuff in a hurry, but they’ve had weeks to plan several aspects of this and they should have done better than a 3-page set of bullet points!

We would all love to go out walking to these beauty spots during the glorious weather we're having, but we cant, as the fair rightly points out its not vbery clear but we're all adults & have to think outside the box, am I wrong in what I'm doing, yes, then dont do it
I go out for a 5 mile walk walk from my house in Acklam & its nice to see families doing likewise, they would love to be at the seaside, or park but they know they cant, stay in & keep safe

Name & shame anyone flouting the guidance.

Billy69_uk makes a fair point about whether the police are targeting the right people, definitely easier to target a couple of walkers in the countryside than a gang of chavs on a housing estate

Can't believe people harping on about the government not making it clear. Now I hate Boris & his ilk as much as any sane person but how many times do people need to be told to just stay at home?

Why is it essential for you to go for a 5-mile walk instead of, say, a 3-mile walk?

Why have the Government specifically requested local authorities and national parks to keep their parks, beaches and countryside open for essential exercise, if it’s not acceptable for the public to use them?

Why are the car parks open at those facilities, if it’s not acceptable to drive there to use them?

I’m not having a go at you by the way, far from it. I’m just saying that these are the seeds of confusion which are sown by sending out mixed messages and not being clear about what is and isn’t acceptable.

My 5 mile walk is from my house & back, not jumping in a car & going 20 odd miles than in the moors, not saying its ideal, but its the way it has to be
I dont have to do 5 miles of course, yes I could do 3, I shortened it yesterday to just a few miles, the same walk I've done for years

Why would you live in Sunderland or why would you go to Redcar?
Redcar use to be a great place to visit and it is only through the lack of forward thinking from the councils that it's ended up in the state it was. Redcar was always a brilliant night out and the Top Deck would have given the Maddison and Mandy's a run for its money in the 80's. Living in Normanby, we would regularly jump on the 263 and head off to the Top Deck rather than go to Middlesbrough.

The beaches at Redcar are really nice with the view from the South Gare looking towards Huntcliff being one of my favourites.

Edit: I didn't have an argument for Sunderland. :ROFLMAO:

I could see more people in the first 100m (not many and I cross the road to avoid) than I'd see in the next 10 miles.

Why are people hung up about practicalities and totally missing the point on principal?

Both critical questions that need answering..

Good on Derby police force. Naming and shaming and embarrassing people is the only way people are going to get the message into their thick heads.
Another thing I've never understood is why are people putting their dogs on the car to take them for a walk?

People are putting their dogs on the car! I know we need to keep social distancing but putting your dog on top of the car is going a bit too far. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I'm bored now.

The message is no social contact and then the police socially contact. What message did that give? Mind you they must have immunity as they walk and drive in pairs less than 2m apart.
