Anyone read Craig Johns article on greenwood this morning?

I think one thing to remember with Greenwood is he is in the same year group as Joe Gibson. One year ahead of Josh Coburn, Pharrell Willis, Cain Sykes, Jack Hannah, Sam Collins, Terrel Agyemang. If any of those had broken through this year, been a semi-regular, 2nd most goal involvements (or equivalent for their position) and was out of contract in the summer would we be wanting them to sign a new deal? Surely yes?

I don't think he's very good. He has good moments but not good games. He's got good technique but he doesn't utilise it. He does the dumbest things over and over gain and rarely seems to make the right decision. He's constantly trying to dribble through players and he's not even good at dribbling. He holds onto the ball when he should pass. He has a dribble success rate of 25% but the daft thing is that even if the dribbles were successful they wouldn't have been in dangerous positions. He's been dispossessed 49 times (bottom 10% in the league stats); compare that to Jones who has been dispossessed only 15 times, despite attempting almost 3x as many dribbles. He scored a great free kick against Leicester but that was his only goal from 30 attempts from outside the area. He doesn't create chances for others because he makes wrong decisions. 0.68 chances created per 90 mins puts him in the bottom 12% of players in his position in the league and he's only got an xA of 0.1 per 90.

Defensively he fouls and gives away unnecessary free kicks in dangerous positions too often.

I don't think it is a good value signing. I think it is someone who we would be stuck with for several years who never improves and has an expensive contract we can't get rid of.
Nails it. As I said below the article thread, if we pay 1.5 mil it'll be the biggest transfer ever paid for him. Love to be proved wrong - nothing against the lad - but think he'll end up non league.

Fair play, but most of them won't make it either.

1.5m gets you very little in todays game
£1m would get you
Danny Armstrong , Kilmarnock RW AM RM age 26 who has 9 goals 14 assists and is a very good player .
£1m would get you
Alex Cochrane LM LB CM Hearts age 23 , cheaper than Obrien and as good .
£1.5m would go a big way to getting both . Salaries reasonable too.
Both technically good players.
Danny McNamara RB , Alan Browne CM Sam Gallagher CF should be high on our wanted list as free agents.

Exactly this - not good enough

It was a red flag that a team playing in our own league, where you can have at least 7 players on the bench, didn’t feel the need to keep him even as a squad player.

No pace, not really creative, and although he scored a fantastic free-kick he has since missed the target with every single other one he has taken.

There are better players out there.

Scottish players lol
Obviosly not watched them LOL 😂
Cochrane is ENGLISH . BHA academy .
Souness, Barry Robson , Murdoch , I had the pleasure of watching them . Give over mart , some decent Players in the Scottish premier league, Theo Bair , Miovski , Shankland would do well in the championship.

Would I want him in the first eleven currently?. No. Do I want to see this side improve? Yes. Therefore it makes little sense to me to buy him. Cheap or not.

I don't think Rogers did much more than Greenwood to be honest, and Rogers was played in his correct position a lot more.

Greenwood seems more of a central attacking midfielder to me, but he's largely been played wide and had a lot of games up front (on his own) which he's certainly not suited for, most strikers aren't even suited to that.

£1.5m seems ok for me, but I'm not convinced he's good enough yet to be playing in his correct position in a promotion side, which is where I would hope we're aiming to be. He will probably get there though, just a case of if we have the time to wait and if we need the funds for elsewhere.

Rogers had something like 16 goals and assists in all competitions, he also had created more chances than pretty much the rest of the squad put together. He was 4th or 5th for creating chances in the whole division by the time he left.
Rogers had done much much more than Greenwood in the half a season with us than Greenwood has done up till now.

We dont want bang average championship players unless we want to stagnate in this division

You're right, we don't, we all want the best players in the league and to never lose a game...

But realistically we've got what we've got and we can afford who we can afford.

Find me a player, in the league, 22 and under, better than Greenwood, who we can buy for £1.5 million?

bottom end maybe, it's a massive step up for any of those players, very few % of players come from that league and are stars at this level. Particularly ones like Shankland who is 28 and never played at this level.

I'm not trying to start a stats war. I assume Wikipedia is wrong - which shows him with over 20 league appearance for Leeds?
appearances yes, wiki doesn't differentiate between a 90 minute appearances, and 3 min sub appearances. He was almost exclusively a sub for leeds and when all the minutes are added up, it's about 7 matches worth. He was an untested novice when he came here. He started off well, then circumstances meant he had to play a lone striker role, which isn't really his thing.

It's kind of like Rogres, everyone was on his case, playing out of position, but he showed some good moments, then we made a huge profit and everyone recognised yeah, actually he did have ability.

The fact that you can't name a player "better than Greenwood" at this moment is not the best way to buy a player. But they do exist and we have seen Greenwood perform and for me he isn't what we need. Id rather speculate with £1.5m on a young player and develop him rather than take a player who has played a handful of good games and gone missing in far too many.

They both have 8 goal involvements in the league though (Greenwood was cuptied in the LC so all competitions isn't comparable) and I imagine that was probably the position when Rogers left.
