Anyone read Craig Johns article on greenwood this morning?

Basically wanting the club to "explore" spaffing 1.5m up the wall (plus wages) on a player that in my opinion, has had 2 good games for us (Sunderland H & A).

Goes missing when we're up against it.

Out of the starting 11 recently and deservedly so.

Scored a couple of good goals but so did Tarmo Kink.

I'd like us to look at our own players instead personally.

He's been a typical young player for me, inconsistent. Has shown some really good qualities and had some good games, but he's also been poor in games too and at the moment has rightly found himself out of the team.

At his age and with the potential to improve I wouldn't be against signing him (wages allowing). He has a tremendous work rate and never hides even when he's having a rough time. I think for 1.5m (again, I stress if wages are reasonable), I'd say he's a useful player to have.

Only Forss in the current squad has more goal involvements than him this season.
I've certainly seen him have more than 2 good games though he has struggled since xmas (like many others).
I think he is been a bit unlucky with some of his finishing though could do with more composure at times.
Obvious talent and workrate. I wouldn't be averse to signing him but it depends what our other options are.

I think wages are the big issue here, not the fee. This is always mentioned in the newspaper articles about him. If Leeds go up, then he presumably has a wage rise in his contract which changes things somewhat, and would mean another loan next season (to us or elsewhere).

I suspect that he will not be back.

I don't think he's very good. He has good moments but not good games. He's got good technique but he doesn't utilise it. He does the dumbest things over and over gain and rarely seems to make the right decision. He's constantly trying to dribble through players and he's not even good at dribbling. He holds onto the ball when he should pass. He has a dribble success rate of 25% but the daft thing is that even if the dribbles were successful they wouldn't have been in dangerous positions. He's been dispossessed 49 times (bottom 10% in the league stats); compare that to Jones who has been dispossessed only 15 times, despite attempting almost 3x as many dribbles. He scored a great free kick against Leicester but that was his only goal from 30 attempts from outside the area. He doesn't create chances for others because he makes wrong decisions. 0.68 chances created per 90 mins puts him in the bottom 12% of players in his position in the league and he's only got an xA of 0.1 per 90.

Defensively he fouls and gives away unnecessary free kicks in dangerous positions too often.

I don't think it is a good value signing. I think it is someone who we would be stuck with for several years who never improves and has an expensive contract we can't get rid of.

I get the impression hes not very bright and willing to learn. I think he could end up out of favour very quickly and difficult to offload

I think that is spot on - big wage which will go up further if Leeds go up. I suppose it depends on whether Sam Greenwood wants to drop his wages to play football. Or maybe he believes he can win a starting place at Leeds.

Initially I really liked the look of Greenwood, looked good in ran from mid-October to early December. You don’t mind the aggressive side to his game if he is contributing with goals and assists, but when they dry up it gets quite annoying very quickly.

The drop off has been worrying though. Doesn’t look like doing anything of note when he starts or comes off the bench.

I hope the club decide against this in the summer.

He had a great spell in October/November where he scored 4 goals in 6 league games. He then got 2 assists in the next 2 games.

I agree that when he has a bad game, it's very noticeable, but he's definitely not given the credit he deserves when he plays well - which is 50 50 for me.

If he'll drop his wages, £1.5 million is an absolute steal for a average championship player - even if he's sitting on our bench.

Trust Carricks judgement but it feels like it's a bit of Ravel Morrison type conundrum.

Not from an attitude perspective (no reason to think Greenwood is unprofessional) but from a "how do you get the best out of his talent" perspective. Because he clearly has a lot of natural ability.

As a coach you probably think "if I can just unlock that ability, I'll have a hell of a player on my hands" but that's easier said than done. Feels like Greenwood's football IQ maybe let's him down a bit and he's not blessed with significant pace.

22 now, but does he even have a best position yet? Big 18 months for him given his age. £1.5m probably a fair fee, but he shouldn't be on big money until he proves himself as a consistently strong performer at this level and he hasn't yet.

Can't see us offering anything like what he'd probably want.

I think this is a good point, he is capable of game-changing moments but they don't come often enough and he struggles to influence games at times. But maybe that will come with experience, a la Akpom. It's been mentioned a few times but this is his first full season as a regular. No reason why he couldn't continue to develop next season - but as I said above it depends what/who our other options are.

I don't think Rogers did much more than Greenwood to be honest, and Rogers was played in his correct position a lot more.

Greenwood seems more of a central attacking midfielder to me, but he's largely been played wide and had a lot of games up front (on his own) which he's certainly not suited for, most strikers aren't even suited to that.

£1.5m seems ok for me, but I'm not convinced he's good enough yet to be playing in his correct position in a promotion side, which is where I would hope we're aiming to be. He will probably get there though, just a case of if we have the time to wait and if we need the funds for elsewhere.

I like him. Plays with an edge that not many of the others do and has obvious footballing qualities that if he can become more consistent, he'd be a quality player.

No thanks.

Hasn't done enough to warrant spending £1.5m on him. Plus there's the wages - which won't be cheap.

£1.5m for a squad player (at best) - big no thanks.
