Anyone looking forward to the James Webb Space Telescope images tomorrow ?

Space is proper massive.

If you have three ping pong balls, one being earth, one being the sun, and one being proxima centauri... which is the closest star to the sun...

You place the earth and the sun in your hands, next to each other.... By the scale of the distance, the third ping pong ball would need to be in the south of France.
Im sure that’s on an episode of Porridge

I don't think "my hands to the South of France" is an accepted unit of alternative measurement. For distance units are usually double decker buses, blue whales or football pitches.

I think the ones with the bahtinov type spikes might be local stars, but yes, everything else is a galaxy. Considering just how many are in that grain of rice piece of sky is insane
Could be, I don't know. It would have to be very much closer though. Think of the scale of a galaxy.

You look at things like this and wonder why "is there life on other planets?" can even be considered something worth discussing.

Challenge. Accepted.

Proxima Centauri is approx. 4.246 light years away. One light year is 5.879 trillion miles.
So PC is 24.96 trillion miles away and the sun 93 million miles away.
This means PC is 268,411 times further away from the sun than the sun is from earth.

The length of the Riverside is 105 metres (0.065 miles).

If the earth was the Riverside stadium, and the sun was another Riverside stadium built directly behind the earth...

The third Riverside stadium would need to be built 17,446 miles away.
Sydney is only 10,000 miles away.

Even more mind blowing. If you imagine an atoms nucleus as a golf ball. It's nearest electron would be 2.5km away.

I'm bored at work with 8 minutes to go so here's some more space stuff...

The furthest star we can see with the naked eye is in the Cassiopeia constellation, and it's 16,000 light years away.

16,000 light years is 94 quadrillion (yes, quadrillion) miles.

If the earth was the Riverside stadium, and the sun was another Riverside stadium built directly behind the earth...

The third Riverside stadium would have to be built half way to Mars.

Anyone who’s interest has been piqued by this, who hasn’t already, I’d really recommend driving out to a dark sky area one night and looking up - even with a pair of binoculars you’ll be blown away by what you can see.

Were driven out into the Western Desert in Egypt at night years back and instructed to get out the van, lie on our backs and look up.

Cue loads of astonished cries of "Oh Wow" "That's Amazing" and "It's so beautiful".

Then (geordie) Mrs Chut spoiled it with "Phuckin Hell man, looka that!"
