We're currently looking for a larger family car and like the Volvo XC range. Has anyone got one? If so, what are they like from a reliability perspective/cost to repair?

Ideally looking for one around the 2014-2016 range for XC60. (slightly newer for XC40)

Had two cc xc60s over a four year in period , lovely cars, my only concern in buying 2nd hand is its paintwork. I lived and worked in the country and they did seem to chip and scratch easily. Also had cream leather seats that appeared to draw the dye from my very old levi's., Oddly.

Almost any light material will draw dye from jeans. The dye in jeans is famous for transference, if you look at things like Sofa insurance it usually talks about it being specifically excluded.

I learned this after sitting on my cream sofa in a pair of jeans and wondering later why the colour seemed off. Had to pretend I had spilled a blue WKD on it to get them to come and clean it.

Do a google image search for jeans dye transfer and youll see plenty of seats, bags etc all covered in indigo dye.

Had a 2016 XC60 D4 SE nav from brand new as a lease.. just sent it back the day we went in to lock down... I’ll break the review down for you below

engine... bullet proof just like you would expect. Mine was 190bhp and if I pushed it not much would overtake it.

ride... a bit spongy even for an SUV... did role in the corners

comfort... I’ve had loads of cars including Jags and Mercs... I have never had a more comfortable car than the Volvo. Was quite happy to drive for 4-5 hours and never felt bad for it.

space... the boot is huge never ran out of room even with 3 adults and two kids in tow... the back seat was massive

toys... sat nav, DAB, cruise, Bluetooth. Only thing it missed was a link like apple play but the new models have it now. Sat nav was a bit daft sometimes as it was going for the shortest route as the crow flies.

bad bits...

Mine was only 2WD but was stupidly heavy on fuel... it would empty the tank on a run to Dorset (£70 quid) where as most other cars I have had do it on half a tank

daft on front tyres too.. was lucky to get 10-12k out of them for no valid reason ( actually found the economy tyres the best around 65-80 a corner)

service A was around £275 from mills... the B was £400 so on the dear side

brakes were about standard about every 20k.

all in all a lovely car... I wanted a new one when that one went back but the prices have shot up on the new model and I wasn’t gonna pay the difference for essentially the same car... they are now overpriced

looked at the XC40 but the boot is tiny and it’s the same price as my old 60 so I wasn’t prepared to downsize for the same money either

if you have any other questions just ask

I had an XXC40 as a hire car. Lovely thing to drive. SUVs aren't my thing but I travelled the length of the country in at in one hit and it was nice. The interior and infotainment seems really spartan and minimalist. As someone who now has a car with virtually no buttons at all, and not even an instrument cluster I must admit you get used to it. It simplifies things.

I would agree with @WTF! the boot is really not good enough. Could just about fit our luggage for a week away and there are only 2 of us. The XC60 would be the one to go for.

Build quality is generally great in a Volvo and if you're interested in not dying then they are world leaders in both passive and active safety.

Thanks for the replies guys! I think the XC60 is where we will go. With a kid and the clutter that comes with it, the boot will be needed. Glad to hear its great for long distance as it's gonna hopefully make the 4/5 hour journey home a lot smoother.

Oh one last thing.... Dont use jump leads on it (to start another car) They dont like it and my battery burst into flames...

The only damage was to the auto start stop sensor (£2000 to replace) but lucky for me it was still under warranty and i managed to argue the toss as the handbook didnt say you couldnt do it
