Andy Preston's Middlesbrough Council

Yes, many people standing to represent wards don't live in that particular ward.
Do you have figures on how many do vs don't?

Just because you don't live in a ward doesn't mean you don't know the area also. My old oxbridge ward councillor lived in Ingleby but grew up in and lived in oxbridge prior. I'd rather have him remained the councillor than the conservative Mercedes dealer councillor standing against the next candidate who lived in the ward, or the other Labour councillor who seemed totally disinterested

I don't have figures but I know from the councillors living in Billingham that they don't all live in the wards they represent.

I have no difficulty with it, they live close enough to know what the ward and town as a whole are about.

I think the majority of councillors in Middlesbrough actually live in the ward they represent, if not in the ward, very close by. Indeed during the elections most councillors will use the fact that they live in the ward as an encouragement for residents to come out and vote for us.

Without a doubt the Mayor lives the furthest away from the area he represents.

Are you joking ??

He also does a cracking poundshop Peter Kay act on Twitter with his "Who remembers Jack Hatfields" type posts, or his "Beautiful Teesside" posts (not beautiful enough for him to actually live on Teesside of course).

Worth his money for that alone...
Funny but true. A waste of public money, the mayoral role offers no value at all to the way Middlesbrough Council is run.

Politics influencing public services can never be a good thing, including councillors.

Also add PCC's to that list too.

Yeah having a mayor that doesn't live in Middlesbrough when we have a tees valley mayor, and a PCC who promised to get tough on crime then it emerged he had caution for theft but said it gave him the chance to straighten his life out, couldn't make it up 😂 pcc seems to me to be a waste of money role now matter who holds it

Do you think that affects his ability to do his job? Other than not being able to use it as a tool to encourage people to vote?

I don't think it necessarily affects his ability to do the job, I think the mayor might, why else would he have used his parents address on the ballot sheet and not his actual address where he lives?

The post of mayor can be removed if the people want rid, surely. Isn't it about time a party campaigned to return to the previous system of a mayor for ceremonial purposes only?

I am in favour of that, we're not allowed to put it to the people till Sept 2023 at the earliest. we had a referendum in 2013, Labour campaigned to do away with the position of mayor, a certain Andy Preston-who stated as a fact he wasn't interested in the position, campaigned to keep it- (The keep it won on a tiny turnout ) he stood and lost in 2015 but was successful in 2019.

C'mon, all this criticism of Andy Preston is unfair, after all he does show his face at the weekly litter pick. What more could we ask for from our Mayor?

I thought having a Middlesbrough postal address was a legal requirement of standing for election?
It was pretty well documented that his main residence wasn't in Middlesbrough so he wasn't fooling anyone if that was his intention.

Well he was, because he qualified to stand.

Anyone who lives or "has a place of work" in the boundaries can put up for election.
