Andalucia

Almería. Not so much the city - although it's not bad - but the cabo de gata. Beautiful scenery and wild beaches. I was in Gibraltar on Monday and it is worth a visit for a day. Not more in my opinion. Very expensive too.
As I know well. Ta for the info you gave us last year.

If you do get to Almería city the Cable Ingles is nice to walk along. Also the underground tunnels from the civil war (Refugios) are good as well. However you may need a translator for the guided visits.

Will all be a much easier journey by train in a few years. When the fast train network is up and running across southern Spain.

Nerja was really nice a few years ago - still a little fishing village with a bit of tourism attached. Now its just another Costa town swamped with Brits and Irish, and has expanded massively in all directions with generic holiday homes. There's still a bit of the old vibe in the back streets though.
Just been for the first time in 10 years to scatter some of my wifes ashes as it was her favourite place. Really enjoyed going back there.Missed it really. Great laid back place not overun by Brits that i could see. And it did not look like it had expanded much in the 10 years since I was last there.

Sometimes a thread appears on here that reminds what a truly wonderful online community this forum is.
Recommedations and opinions that no travel site or guide book could get near.
Thread saved for my motorhome Spanish tour.
Thanks all.

I’m sure some can help with ideas for a 3 week trip to the region - October.

I’ve got Cordoba, Malaga old town, Ronda, and Seville in my sights (been to Granada)
We also want to get across to Valencia.
Plan is 2 nights or more in each spot we go to

Wondered if anyone else can suggest other places to consider.

We just like to roam around, enjoy the architecture, history and get a feel for places.
We’ve got a Malaga, Seville, Huelva trip planned for March probably taking in Granada and maybe Jerez. I’ve been to Gibraltar and certainly ain’t going back! I’ll be driving, but some train days included.

How are you getting on with your plans?
We are going early April via Avignon - then on to Valencia to do the key trips around Andalucia
Decided to take a bus to Faro from Malaga so we can get a train to Porto.

We will come back via Santiago de Composteno, Girona, and Biarritz

Going to use the 10 day train pass wisely and prob just book some local trains around Cordoba, Jerez, cadiz, Malaga and Seville
We weren't that far advanced - looking at May. That's a very interesting itinerary. I'd been thinking of Paris to Barcelona and then Valencia, returning via Madrid, but I might look further into alternatives.

I am probably a bit biased. However I feel that Almería province is one of the hidden tourism gems of Andalucía. Murcia province (south of Alicante) also has some good places to see. Although not in Andalucía.

I am so looking forward to when the fast train network in the south east corner of Spain is complete. So we can get fast trains to other parts of Europe. Plus people from northern Europe can visit us via trains.

I can second that, Almeria province is very much worth a visit. I spent a year living in the foothills of Sierra Nevada, further west near Almuñécar which is a nice seaside town during the summer season, but sleepy in the winter. Frigiliana is worth a visit off season though. It’s a hillside town with a lot of character.

This statue is very close to the entrance to the tunnels under Almería city. That were created to protect people from bombing in the civil war. Prior to world war 2.

Other places of interest are the castle (alcazaba) and the cathedral in the city. Also, this is interesting. Just inland from the city...

Thanks anyway - thinking of getting a car for a week whilst we are out there so your ideas might be really helpful
If you are driving at some point the route from Motril on the coast up towards Granada is magnificent.

About half way up on the left is a really good bodega to visit. With a hotel nearby. On the right, close to the same level is a really interesting small town built in to a small gorge. Higher up (and closer to Granada) there is a nice basic hotel with stables nearby.

The views on the way up are to die for.

I never noticed the flies when I was there recently. Maybe it depends on the time of year? We were there in November last year.

@1finny

This Friday on Channel 4 - first in the new series of Joe Lycett's Travelman is 48 hours in Malaga. It'll be typical Joe Lycett approach I guess, but he does do the Caminito del Rey which will give you an idea of what it's like.

Also, Channel 5 did a 6 episode series a while back about Michael Portillo's Andalucia - one episode was Granada, another Malaga, another Cordoba etc and were quite interesting IIRC
