Andalucia

We stopped in Jerez, best sherry I've ever tasted and I'm not a Sherry drinker, Seville is also worth a look , more than Once if you can manage it. That area is the real Spain, unlike the Costas.
The trains are clean and efficient- have a good time :)

I'm sure it'll be on your list (as long as you've got a head for heights ;)) but the Caminito del Rey is a must - needs booking in advance though (though it's a little known fact that a small number of tickets go on sale early every morning from the cabin at the north entrance - but not worth the risk IMHO)

Nerja was really nice a few years ago - still a little fishing village with a bit of tourism attached. Now its just another Costa town swamped with Brits and Irish, and has expanded massively in all directions with generic holiday homes. There's still a bit of the old vibe in the back streets though.
That's a real shame, its been a few years since I've been...

That’s great - I’m assuming there will be some kind of bus from Malaga?

Even better - El Chorro train station, with a service direct from Malaga Maria Zambrano station, is right at the foot of the walk, and shuttle buses to take you to the entrance at the top (the walk is one way !)

Benhavis is a pretty little mountain town. Sits overlooking the gorge. Lots of eateries as well considering its size. Often used to venture there for good food. If you fancy yacht watching port of abuse sorry puerto Banus but dont stay too long very expensive.

Haha, when I lived in San Pedro, we called Banus "Port of Abuse". And with good reason. Horrific stuff goes on there.

I was going to mention the gorge at Benhavis. Good place to do canyoning ... I think there are organised trips. As long as you know it ain't gonna rain, it would probably be ok to do without.

Another cracking shout - might be a bit tricky without a car tho.
And, if they are proper hippies it would be more than a pint😳
I was going to suggest this area. Including the Alpujarras (in the foothills of the mountains). Plus the Sierra Nevada mountains themselves. Some incredible scenery there.

These areas are shared between Granada and Almería provinces.

All that is indeed true, but a bit tricky by train !

Almería. Not so much the city - although it's not bad - but the cabo de gata. Beautiful scenery and wild beaches. I was in Gibraltar on Monday and it is worth a visit for a day. Not more in my opinion. Very expensive too.
I know you like the Cabo de Gata area. As you say, some great beaches and scenery there.

If you consider Almería city there are a few interesting things to visit. However, as you say, it is not a must see place though.

If you are ever planning to come back again in the future. Almería is due to be linked to Europe by fast trains in 2026. If the targets are hit.

I think the plan is to have them between Almería and Murcia by 2026. Then all the way up the east coast of Spain to France eventually.

There is a book called something like 'slow trains around Spain' by Tom Chesshyre in which he visits some really small out of the way places.

Spend at least 2-3 days in Seville, it's magnificent. Hotel Gravina 51 (if you can get it at a sensible price now) is a great place to stay, or the H10

Would appreciate feedback on your return - I bought 10 day interrail passes in the recent sale and we're planning to go next year. Cordoba, Ronda and Seville, also Granada as we've never been. Looks to be only one train a day from Barcelona to Granada at a silly time in the morning, so thought we'd go via Madrid.
How are you getting on with your plans?
We are going early April via Avignon - then on to Valencia to do the key trips around Andalucia
Decided to take a bus to Faro from Malaga so we can get a train to Porto.

We will come back via Santiago de Composteno, Girona, and Biarritz

Going to use the 10 day train pass wisely and prob just book some local trains around Cordoba, Jerez, cadiz, Malaga and Seville

I’m sure some can help with ideas for a 3 week trip to the region - October.

I’ve got Cordoba, Malaga old town, Ronda, and Seville in my sights (been to Granada)
We also want to get across to Valencia.
Plan is 2 nights or more in each spot we go to

Wondered if anyone else can suggest other places to consider.

We just like to roam around, enjoy the architecture, history and get a feel for places.
The Alpujarras (foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains) are worth a visit. In Granada and Almería provinces.

Maybe find a trip over the top of the mountains as well. Before the winter snow sets in. Then go towards Almería city in the lowlands on the other side of the mountains.

On the way to Almería there is the only desert in Europe. Where lots of Spaghetti Westerns and lots of other films were filmed.

As you are making your way to Valencia there are also good places to see in Murcia province.

In all of these areas there are lots of good bodegas to visit.

My suggestions would need a car as well. I had not read that you were doing things by rail.
