And Away - Bob Mortimer

A friend of ours told me a few days ago that she had just finished reading Bob Mortimer's autobiography. So I thought I would give it a go.

I think it is a good read with references to places I remember from when I was a kid. Very enjoyable.

Corrected: includes a lot about 2015 heart problems. Published in 2021.

I listened to the audio book which is Bob reading it. It really adds to the book, especially in parts where he is struggling to contain his laughter at his own stories!

It was released/published in 2021?

Bob’s books are brilliant.. I read The Satsuma Complex whilst on holiday this Summer which was excellent.

I’ve also just finished listening to Alan Partridge’s latest book on Audiobook which he narrates in his usual style and well worth a listen although hearing him describe in detail having sex with his girlfriend was very uncomfortable, especially as I was having my lunch at work at the time! 😆

I’ve just moved on to James Blunts new audiobook, again self narrated, which has some very funny stories and some moving parts too.. although he admits that a lot of it is stretching the truth!

Read the book and really enjoyed it.
After recommendations on here, downloaded the audio book ready for the long drive down to Devon this week.

We shared a doctor when we were kids. Dr Longbottom.

I was trying to remember where the surgery was. I think it was on Roman Road. Or near that area.

He was my doctor when I was a kid The surgery is still there on Linthorpe Road next to the old Swedish mission
Thanks for that. There goes my dodgy memory again.

Updated: I think it was the dentist on Roman Road. Not the doctor.

Dr Longbottom's surgery was on Linthorpe Road near Sacred Heart Church. He was my doctor too, he was also known as Dr.Basil. He was very short sighted I recall, but a wonderful doctor. I also lived on what Bob refers to as the 'Lakes Estate', the fruit van business he refers to was on the corner of my road.

I remember him as Doctor Basil as well.

I was down from Green Lane. Off Keith Road. Not far from where it changed to Emerson Avenue.

Never really went to your area much. I guess I walked past it when walking up to play rugby.

Doctor Blakey for me at Linthorpe Surgery!

And yes, it’s the dentist that’s on Roman Rd opposite the Linny

I have always wondered where this Lakes Estate is. I lived in Tollesby and Linthorpe for over 20 years and cannot remember anywhere that had the names of Lakes in the name?

Ullswater, Conniston, Derwentwater, Thirlmere. All running off and behind Acklam Road near the library but to be fair I'd never heard of them being referred to as the lakes estate at any point.

Funnily enough when I read the bit about the garden creeping I was reminded of the time the kids around our way bumped in to some bigger kids we didn't know and this one kid spun this tale about how there was a lass lived on Priory Road who undressed in her back bedroom with the curtains open. He went in to great detail as to what she did in front of said window. Obviously me and the rest of my 10 year old mates piled in to this garden only to be chased off by some disgruntled old gadge as we'd disturbed his rabbits. I'd put money on it being Bob who told us that.

Ah, behind the rugby and cricket ground. So I did not walk past it going to rugby. It was just close to the rugby and the bar where I had my first ever beer served to me.

b***r made me cry. Was fine reading the book but listening to him describe his wedding day set me off for all sorts of reasons. Wife now things I'm utterly mad.

Of course, that's logical. I had mates who lived in Coniston and Ullswater, but never heard it described as the Lakes Estate.
Andy McDonald MP was from Coniston.

I'm currently listening to it on Spotify audiobooks. The man himself telling it in his own words. It's sweet, funny and insightful. He has been a great companion on my drives to work this last week.
