America and Gun Control

They still scared King George gonna get them.

Mentalists.
There is an element of that - live free or die etc , although I am reading an interesting book at the moment ( American republics - Alan Taylor ) & he basically states that the Federal/post- US Constitution Govt imposed more control upon them than the UK Govt ever did.
All nations have it but it is amazing just how different the reality was/is from the popular narrative ( much of our history has to be included in that statement ) .

Freedom to kill in uniform

Arizona officer fired after fatally shooting man in wheelchair

A US police officer has been fired after fatally shooting a man in a motorised wheelchair while responding to a reported shoplifting.

Tucson police officer Ryan Remington fired nine shots at 61-year-old Richard Lee Richards during the incident.

The Arizona city's police chief said on Tuesday that he's "deeply disturbed and troubled" by the officer's actions during the incident.
Mr Remington's attorney has defended his client's actions.

On Tuesday, police in Tucson released footage of the Monday incident, which began after Mr Richards was accused of stealing a toolbox from a local Walmart.

Both a Walmart employee who confronted him and Mr Remington reported that Mr Richards had brandished a knife during the incident, refused to comply with orders to surrender the weapon, and attempted to move away.

According to the Walmart employee, Mr Richards said that "if you want me to put down the knife, you're going to have to shoot me".

The footage - drawn from CCTV cameras and police bodycams, including one on Mr Remington - shows Mr Remington and another officer following Mr Richards to the entrance of another nearby store, with one officer instructing him to "not go into the store".

Mr Remington then fires nine shots from his gun at Mr Richards, who slumps forward and falls from his wheelchair. He was then handcuffed. He was later declared dead. [Well what a surprise!]

"His [Mr Remington's] deadly use of force in this incident is a clear violation of department policy and directly contradicts multiple aspects of our use of force and training," Tucson police chief Chris Magnus said on Tuesday.

"As a result, the department moved earlier today to terminate Officer Remington," he added.

Tucson Mayor Regina Romero said in a statement that Mr Remington's actions were "unconscionable and indefensible".

The incident is now being reviewed by the Pima County Attorney's Office.

Michael Storie, an attorney representing Mr Remington, told the BBC in an interview that the department's overview of the case is "only half the story" and that "many more important details were withheld" from the department's news conference.

"Officers always have alternative actions that can be second guessed," Mr Storie said. "However, just because there are multiple actions, doesn't mean the one he chose was inappropriate."

America's love of guns is a sign of living in fear.

The USA will never truly be the "land of the free" while they continue to live in such fear, and when they're free of fear, they will choose to get rid of their guns.

I don't think you can simply impose our gun laws on them and think the rate of gun crime will suddenly be the same as our though. There are simply too many guns in america society: more than there are people I believe?

Meanwhile, any excuse to give this an airing...

To be fair I like guns. I'm not crazy or likely to go on a rampage.

My dad was a game keeper so brought up around and fired Shot guns and rifles. I served in the armed forces so fired SA80s/MPMGs/ Glocks etc . I'm 'comfortable' around them and more so respect them. I've done enough courses on the bloody things😂

I'd own one or more if we could. I would actually quite like going down a range and doing some shooting on a weekend. I imagine many gun owners in the States are exactly the same. No intention of shooting anyone and just owning as a hobby etc.

I've been to the States a few times and always go to a gun range. Firing WW2/Vietnam and modern day weapons is a 'buzz'. I can see why many when legal to own get obsessed.
Until you have a meltdown and mow down half a dozen people?
People wanting to own lots of guns have something lacking , and by definition shouldn't be anywhere near one

I'm pretty confident I wouldn't meltdown and shoot anyone. The ability to own any amount of guns doesn't make you a lunatic.

I worked with loaded weapons for over 20 years. I regularly held the RF (response force) keys on me for 24 hrs as part of my duty. I had access to multiple SA80s and hundreds of rounds..... Don't need to worry about me😉

They was no heed to worry about this fella either with all that experience

Or this one

Apart from 3 or 4 family members on the West Coast, I don't have any American friends or other family on the Eastern Sea board who own a gun of any type. I know far more people in the UK who have sporting gun licences

Guns are popular in certain areas with certain people, not all areas and not all people, but yes, you can buy a gun more easily in the states than the UK

Agreed, I spent 4 years living there and probably came across 1 or 2 people in all my time who had a gun.

Apparently sales go through the roof of assault rifles (AR15s) and Hand guns around Xmas time.

I guess it's better than a pair of socks or Lynx Box set 😂

It's clearly strange to us. Yet owning a gun in America is like owning a dog. I doubt many (if any) homes won't own a variety of fire arms. I remember asking taxi drivers in florida 'do you have a gun?'. Almost all had one in the glove compartment or down the side of the seat. Just seems crackers

All though I'm all for the right to shoot someone who breaks in or threatens you. I guess the flip side is they are also probably armed.
That might be the case but it's not like you can rush out into the front street and play with them like you could the bike you got back in the day!

Are you telling me my mental state? 😂

I mean as in giving me an example of a person in service going crazy? I'm only taking about myself. I can't speak for all.

As I have said before, people don't go on about owning them & as the stats show, sadly there are millions of them in the USA.
I have lived here for over 17 years and never seen one in a house but I know that the homeowner has one .

and they wonder why so many gun crimes, they really are shick as pigshidt the americans, one place id never want to visit

England is a cup of tea.
France, a wheel of ripened brie.
Greece, a short, squat olive tree.
America is a gun.

Brazil is football on the sand.
Argentina, Maradona's hand.
Germany, an oompah band.
America is a gun.

Holland is a wooden shoe.

Japan is a thermal spring.
Scotland is a highland fling.
Oh, better to be anything
than America as a gun.
