Alternatives to American

The streaming services can be whittled down.. though Google I'm already in for the year & same with Adobe..
I think if we get into the finer points though w we'll struggle. The it infrastructure we use will have something American in it somewhere, whether it's a satellite, a switch or software

I think it's just a case of using common sense and judgement. If you can find an alternative product to American from anywhere else (including China - not them that is issuing threats to destabilise global trade etc) then buy that. If not then do without or buy and don't stress over it.

Life is too short.

With no Chinese ICs inside? It might be owned by Samsung but are they all Korean parts inisde? Where was it assembled?
Samsung stopped manufacturing in China in 2019. Vietnam is now the biggest producer of Samsung mobiles. I'm writing this on my Macbook Pro with a TSMC chip (made in Taiwan, designed in US) but assembled in Shenzhen (china) by Foxconn (Taiwanese owned)

If yiu go down a moral route though yiu won't be able to buy anything from any country, especially not ourselves. My point is that Trump poses a much bigger risk to our economy and a (albeit still small) bigger risk to our way of life
Well, perhaps, but the US are arguably more likely to protect us in a nuclear war (even under Trump) than China.

My overarching point is really just that stopping buying anything from any of these countries including ourselves, on moral grounds, as you’ve said, is futile.

A lot of components that are used in manufacturing are from unusual countries.
I used to own a kitchen business, I was assured that everything was manufactured in the UK/Europe. My business was crippled when the boat got trapped in the Suez Canal. It turns out that it contained containers of wrap and foil manufactured in China and used in the production of kitchen doors and worktops. Containers of parts used in the production of kitchen appliances.
It took about 3 months for production to recover due to the containers ending up all over the world. 6 months until my company could resume full operations.
No matter how you look at it, business is global.

So, hardware aside (and I was thinking about all of the ICs not just the CPUs, what about the RAM, PSUs, the WIFI chips etc), who uses an OS that would not be part of US/Chinese boycott?

How many could work without Windows, MacOS, OSx, Android - all very much US owned?

Huawei. They have their own OS

How far are we going?
Not buying American authors books? They’re sure to contribute to American economy if I buy an £8 paperback. They can go whistle!

Huawei has its own OS now, with an associated app store, but there's not much for the western market. A lot of the Vietnamese chipmakers are Chinese or Taiwanese-owned and were set up to get around US sanctions.
China is encouraging greater Linux use within China, and is also developing its own Linux-based distributions, e.g. Kylin and OpenKylin

Yes. We are tripping over Huawei OS PCs at work. Every bit as good as windows with a free login to the Chinese Intelligence portal to save messing about.

Come on. Let's be serious. How could the VAST majority of people live their lives without a US OS?

A boycott of US goods could never happen. Or Chinese.

Got no chance of making cut through with this kind of stance.
Remember the thread on ditching twitter?
It’s impossible for some to live without it FFS

But
There is probably stuff you can do where there is real choice.
That’s a start.
