We'll still have to beat one of them, just like we'd have had to beat Portsmouth in '08.

The Cardiff match was not actually the final.

At least the draw gives us a chance.
we are good enough to beat any of those teams
as always it depends on you play on the day

I'm not sure they were.

I remember us and Pompey being both outright favs compared to everyone else, but I seem to remember we were just ahead of them in the betting?

We might have been ahead of them the day before: they had to win at Man U after all.
But Man U were favourites at that point.

On the day of our match Pompey were already through to the semis, so no way were we ahead of them.

So thats probably why they were favourites at that point in time.

Ah that'll be correct! I've always had it in my head we were fav's for some reason.

I know Pompey had a good team back then, especially with Defoe up top, but I seem to remember he was cup-tied which may have tipped it in our favour I think.

That, and the fact they were quite a lot better than us that season. The league table doesn't lie.

Had we beaten Cardiff, we would still have had a less than 50/50 chance of lifting the cup.
Pompey would have been favourites for the final, and there's always a thin chance we'd have lost in the semi.

It may still be the best chance we get in my life time. Yes, it still hurts, but we exaggerate how close we were. We love to pity ourselves over this, and it's sometimes just used as an excuse to beat GS.

It could be Wales couldn't it, with Aaron Ramsey who also played for Cardiff that day too (and ran the game to be fair to him).

It wasn't so much that we lost on the day. It was that we rolled over and surrendered without a shot fired. We just didn't turn up. It was one of the most gutless performance I have ever seen from any Boro side (and God knows there's been a few)

It still rankles to this day. We could still have failed but we should have at least tried. We didn't, it was a disgrace.

Agree it was definitely the manner of the defeat.

We went into that game thinking we didn't even need to show up because they were a Championship side and we would cruise to victory.

Up there with one of the most pathetic performances of a 'Boro side I've ever witnessed.

I will never forget the meltdown on this board afterwards. The amount of people who claimed they were never watching the club ever again and that 'football had died' (forgetting that we had actually been beaten by another football team) was, to be honest, absurd.

Indeed. Barnsley, who were worse than us, beat Chelsea, who were better than us, the night before. It's the Cup. It's what happens. And it's why the Cup is great.

Southgate has to go if we dont make the final as a minimum. Has any side ever had an easier run to a world cup and euro final than this?

Come On Lads, letโ€™s not get ahead of ourselves, we all know the ending. (surely not again)

The biggest drama is who will get the Pizza advert, my money is on it being a Man City player, they all like to miss a penalty or 3
