All kicking off at the Brom Wolves match

We go on about Northumbria Police heavy handed tactics but did we see any of these scenes at the SOL?

Newcastle fans probably knew better to be fair than to sit in the home end.

The 1st goal must have been too early in the game to make yourself known. The footage ive seen which ITV didnt show looked like individuals rather than groups getting found out and getting a good hiding

I share your concern. There's always a few copycats, and a few willing to defend it, claiming that being a thug is just being passionate.

If you avoid the train station/escort march to the stadium and get away sharply at the end i'd be surprised if you see any confrontation

It's absolutely bonkers. If football hadn't been invented and someone came up with it and set out how crowds would be segregated and behave, with away fans often having to be escorted by police to matches, you'd think it was something out of a black mirror episode.

People who are otherwise sane, fairly ordinary members of society suddenly lose their minds once they enter a football ground. You wouldn't scream obscenities at someone for supporting another team in the office would you?

Some of my best experiences are where fans have mixed perfectly amicably before and after matches. Interesting to meet other people and get different perspectives.

Mingling with the Sevilla fans before Eindhoven was brilliant.

Who in their right mind wouldn't want that as the "normal" match day experience rather than the, by any other standards, weird dystopian type set up there is now?

Not going to happen, but if the people running the game had anything about them they'd be looking to tackle it and change the culture over time so eventually opposing fans can sit together (if they want to). Not easy, and not a quick fix. But don't think it's impossible either.

Totally agree with this, especially the Eindhoven experience. Like to think we made some friends that day, not at all surprised to hear afterwards that were no arrests.

It used to happen in the bad old days, the match with the most aggro at AP ( inside and outside)that I have been to is the Boro v Newcastle which was 1-1 in either 82 or 83 on the Saturday, the mags refused to budge from the end of the South Terrace and you could see it kicking off all through the match. My mates who went to that game and the previous year when Sunderland came down for a night match say that was a lot worse, with Mackems coming down the South Terrace and trying to invade the Holgate.

I can remember Sunderland getting into the south terrace twice in the early 80's. I think they may have stormed the entrance to the south stand seats and then jumped down.
Don't recall them trying to get into the holgate though, they were thick, but not insane.

Think this isnt really a policing issue in the first instance. The Northumbria police operation is always about keeping the fans apart outside the ground. It is possible for that to be both effective and heavy-handed at the same time, and I think the operation on third round day was both extremely effective and extremely heavy-handed.

This incident was about a break down of segregation inside the ground because an apparently significant number of Wolves fans had tickets in accommodation which was intended for West Brom fans. Any credit for that not happening in the third round tie at the SOL belongs to the club for obviously having an effective ticket sales system presumably based on STs or accounts with a significant purchase history. I think we usually get this quite right too and I don’t anticipate problems of this sort on Sunday.

This fixture was confirmed late, following a replay. it feels like the shortened timescale might have made the segregation aspect of the ticket sale process break down.

While discussing hooliganism, I said "well at least you don't see it in the NFL".
"Don't you believe it" was his reply. Apparently Chicago v Pittsburgh is well known for fighting between rival fans.

Yup, seen a few unsavoury incidents at The Linc, though these have tended to be drunken individuals who were then pulled away (and once given a sobering thump!) by other Eagles' fans.
 
There were Rotherham fans in the home end and they got their eventual marching orders.

I really hope this doesn't become the norm for it to become fodder on social media.

They were in the Holgate regularly early 70’s a few times.
