I can't wait for the Sunderland match on Sunday, but I'm also dreading it as it will bring the idiots out. Don't think my 9 year old is too keen on going after the confrontations during the the Stoke game.

Totally agree with this, especially the Eindhoven experience. Like to think we made some friends that day, not at all surprised to hear afterwards that were no arrests.Spot on. There aren't many (if any?) sports like football for that sort of thing. Most you can mix in no problem at all.
It's absolutely bonkers. If football hadn't been invented and someone came up with it and set out how crowds would be segregated and behave, with away fans often having to be escorted by police to matches, you'd think it was something out of a black mirror episode.
People who are otherwise sane, fairly ordinary members of society suddenly lose their minds once they enter a football ground. You wouldn't scream obscenities at someone for supporting another team in the office would you?
Some of my best experiences are where fans have mixed perfectly amicably before and after matches. Interesting to meet other people and get different perspectives.
Mingling with the Sevilla fans before Eindhoven was brilliant.
Who in their right mind wouldn't want that as the "normal" match day experience rather than the, by any other standards, weird dystopian type set up there is now?
Not going to happen, but if the people running the game had anything about them they'd be looking to tackle it and change the culture over time so eventually opposing fans can sit together (if they want to). Not easy, and not a quick fix. But don't think it's impossible either.
It used to happen in the bad old days, the match with the most aggro at AP ( inside and outside)that I have been to is the Boro v Newcastle which was 1-1 in either 82 or 83 on the Saturday, the mags refused to budge from the end of the South Terrace and you could see it kicking off all through the match. My mates who went to that game and the previous year when Sunderland came down for a night match say that was a lot worse, with Mackems coming down the South Terrace and trying to invade the Holgate.Every time we play them there are rumours of mackems buying in the home end.
Not sure it actually happens to any extent.
I can remember Sunderland getting into the south terrace twice in the early 80's. I think they may have stormed the entrance to the south stand seats and then jumped down.I didn't go to it bu

Think this isnt really a policing issue in the first instance. The Northumbria police operation is always about keeping the fans apart outside the ground. It is possible for that to be both effective and heavy-handed at the same time, and I think the operation on third round day was both extremely effective and extremely heavy-handed.We go on about Northumbria Police heavy handed tactics but did we see any of these scenes at the SOL?
Newcastle fans probably knew better to be fair than to sit in the home end.
The 1st goal must have been too early in the game to make yourself known. The footage ive seen which ITV didnt show looked like individuals rather than groups getting found out and getting a good hiding
Nah, they'll have all left by shortly after halftime.Take note mackems, don’t even think about it next Sunday.
Lodgers are not allowed anywhere but the away end.
Was talking about this a while back to an American friend.I’m not condoning the scenes today but sport is far more that what you’ve implied look af the crowds today in the nfl and at the reaction to the cricket win.
Nothing on a global scale comes close to sport in both uniting and dividing people.
Yup, seen a few unsavoury incidents at The Linc, though these have tended to be drunken individuals who were then pulled away (and once given a sobering thump!) by other Eagles' fans. Was talking about this a while back to an American friend.
While discussing hooliganism, I said "well at least you don't see it in the NFL".
"Don't you believe it" was his reply. Apparently Chicago v Pittsburgh is well known for fighting between rival fans.
Found this too.

They were in the Holgate regularly early 70’s a few times.I can remember Sunderland getting into the south terrace twice in the early 80's. I think they may have stormed the entrance to the south stand seats and then jumped down.
Don't recall them trying to get into the holgate though, they were thick, but not insane.
Where should they have treated him then?Shocking a ball boy got treated pitchside after bottles hit him.
The police put them in there before the Clive road corner became the away end. They were in the Holgate regularly early 70’s a few times.
Yankees Red Sox can be lively as wellWas talking about this a while back to an American friend.
