Just because I know a lot on here loved the man... I've been helping Rachel at BBC put a bit of a tribute together to mark the 5th anniversary of him passing away. There is a special sharing of memories tonight from 9pm til 10pm and then again on Sunday morning from 1030 through to early afternoon.

Ali was my friend. I don't use the word lightly. He helped me through one of the hardest times in my life... quietly and with kindness and, like many more I wept when we lost him. This weekend will start a process when I hope to eventually share even more of the stories and memories and legacy of a man that epitomised our club and community.

I hope you can listen... or take part in my ongoing to celebrate a life... that was extraordinary. Raise a Glass to one of our own.

Listening now, a very good friend of Ali niw speaking who sounds like a pro, who I am proud to call a very special friend, oh & Howard Jones now singing, 🎶👍

On the subject of ali did he play in the save darlo game with gazza, robson and dalglish amungst many others i noticed today flicking through random youtube videos one of the players had brownlee on the back of his shirt

Herb Albert now, some cracking tunes tonight, reminds of the madison at the end of the night but sadly I was alone walk home, my mates all got tapped up me walking home hands in my pockets walking down Linthorpe Road to West Lane 👍🎶🚶😔

The best football commentator ever for me. His passion was incredible. Growing up as a kid I always wanted a season ticket but some years it wasn't possible as my parents couldn't afford it. Luckily for me I had Ali Brownlee. A man who had a gift. He had the ability to make you feel like you were at the ground anyway with his fantastic commentary. You can't help but feel emotional when you hear his commentary now on some of those iconic european games. The bloke is a Teesside legend and always will be. RIP Ali.

Missed

MISSED! More than a sitter,
sliced blind to the cornerflag.

MISSED! More than a penna
escaping the eyes of a ref needing specs.

MISSED! More than a guaranteed
thirty goals a season
from the magic feet
of a quicksilver demon.

MISSED! More than the memory
of when irongates locked us out.

MISSED! More than the iron
hewn from your hills.

Missed like your dad,
your brother, your best mate.
Missed like an angel
watching above the Holgate.
