Albatross at Bempton Cliffs

Thank you for visiting an rspb site, good to know you are keeping me in gainful employment.

I work at the head office in Bedfordshire and we went to Bempton on a team building day once. Five hours to get there on a coach, blooming nightmare someone miscalculated how far it was.

Then I was made to go and count puffins and kittiwakes on the cliff. Bloody nightmare for a non birder like me, the ruddy things kept flying everywhere…

I can imagine that being somewhat arduous for a non-birder mate yes... 🤣 Interesting to find out that's your line of employment though, very cool 👍

Unfortunately not mate, it was only visible through binocs/telescopes but still great to see! It's a black-browed albatross that's made it's way into the northern hemisphere and subsequently become lost, the poor sod. Seems to be doing ok though 👍
As mentioned I’m not a birder but I gather these rare sightings usually are birds that get blown off course or get lost.

i’m amazed at the lengths dedicated birders go to for rare sightings. Suppose it’s no different to driving up the other end of the country to watch 11 men kick a ball on a football pitch though.

This is true! We were there for six hours today, only because my mate is an extremely dedicated twitcher, I think I'd have given up after a couple (not known for my patience) 😬 Was fantastic to see though.

I guess I shouldn’t bite the hand that feeds….but I wouldn’t want to sit on a cliff top or inside a hide with my binoculars for hours on end just on the off-chance that you “might” see something…

on the other hand I’ve got enormous admiration for people who can hear a fluttering in the bushes a mile off or a brief chirping in the distance and can immediately identify the species. Must take some dedication that.
