Air Fryers

The wife has just bought one. I've never used one before and looking for some tips and recipes. It's a polar opposite to cooking how I usually do domestically and professionally.

So gentlemen and ladies, advice?

Search the forum there is a long thread already

At a basic level, reduce cooking time by about 20% and any instructions should be fine

Some people to say reduce heat and cooking time but that's a carryover from people without fan ovens already

For added flavour get an oil sprayer

I've used my oven about 10 times in the last 2 years and most of that was to reheat a pizza is done on the ooni due to size

My in-laws gave us an air fryer a few days ago, only used it a few times but seems very good. Looking online looks like some good attachments for itScreenshot_2023-04-28-15-54-41-13_40deb401b9ffe8e1df2f1cc5ba480b12.jpg
These have both caught my eye.
I have cooked sausages in it, chips in it and chicken nuggets in it. I use olive oil in a spray bottle give it a couple of sprays toss the food around and give it another couple of sprays and seems to be working well. I am looking forward to trying the dehydrate setting on mine once I have the racks for it and I get shopping delivered.
Sorry I can't be of more help I'm only learning how to use mine at the moment.

We are big fans
Frankly, most, non messy, stuff that would normally go in the oven.

great for the likes of jerusalem artichoke crisps, crispy Kale, marinated cauli and much easier to get a crisp on tofu
Also - left over chips from the chippy come up a treat the next day

Suspect meat burgers n sausage will be a problem because of fat and water content

Have a bit of a play

Meat, burgers, sausages, black pudding, gammon, pulled pork and pretty much anything that fits in an oven even dinner for 1 meals from supermarkets all work fine in an air fryer.

They're just fan ovens, but smaller so circulate the heat better. Anything that cooks in an oven, size permitting, will cook better in an air fryer as it'll cook quicker and crisp up better. Even more so if you give it a spritz of oil.

I thought they were a fad....then my parents sold me the dream and I got one. My oven has only been on once since. They're great and use far less electricity than a conventional oven.

Never use my oven now ha ha . If it fits it goes in the air fryer , loads of you tube vids to get an idea of times

For chips or fires etc, don't scrimp on the oil, I know you're a chef so you probably won't anyway mind, but just put plenty on, and excess will drain off as it cooks anyway, doesn't actually leave that much on the chips.

Par-boil fries/ chips, let em cool and dry em, stick em in the fridge overnight (uncovered) or for a few hours to take out even more moisture, that way the oil sticks/ works better. I lay them out on a plate in the fridge to get good circulation, same way as prepping rice for fried rice etc.

I prefer adding oil to the chips in a bowl or deep pyrex jug etc, easier to stir around and ensure everything covered etc.

I don't use fry lite, it's ****, prefer to use normal oil.

You might be able to get aerosol spray oil, being a chef, I've tried to find this but to no avail yet, not in a supermarket anyway.

Reheating pizza in Air Fryer is awesome if it fits.

They work great, I do reduce temperature and time compared to the fan oven. And of course it takes no time to heat up.

Some things work a bit better if you start them off a bit low, like at 150 and then crank them at the end to 250 for a few mins, can get a better crispiness that way, without drying out the middle.

Air Fryers are really easy, and a bit of trial and error can take them next level as it's super easy to vary the temperature (and quickly), not like any other oven which are slower to react.

The only cooking device known to make a slice of ham fly. In mine , a thin cut slice of ham in on its own just to warm through on a low temp , well the downflow turbo air will come up again in the middle and provide a sort of equilibrium of force an air cushion to allow the ham to basically do an impression of that indoor skydiving they do in the tubes. I can hear it , flapping about having the time of its life , and when I end the fun it's usually folded in on itself against the side - again just like one of those indoor skydivers with collapsed vertebra when you surprisingly turn the fan off 🤷‍♂️

Careful with that, or anything which could get lifted up, you might wreck the fan/ top bit. You'll only do it once mind, then you'll learn, quickly.

I put something in mine, which I didn't think would melt, but yep, it melted, but also went airborne and stuck a load of melted plastic to the fan/ top

Was one of those things where you think "why the feck did I do that?"

Pinterest, Reddit and TikTok are also really good for audio air fryer recipes

I'd definitely go the proper home made chips route. Yeah it'll do anything frozen better than an oven, but just tastes so much better doing it properly.

These are great.
