Family discussion started at the weekend do you open an advent calendar in the morning or the evening? Secondly do you start at window 1 or 24 as that is the number of days left till Christmas?

Morning and start on the first with No1.
Edit If away for a few days opened in advance never after

I thought the number corresponded to the hour? So I open it on the 1st at 1am the 2nd at 2am all the way up to the 24th where you open it at midnight mass.

I have two Advent Calendars. The wife bought me a Cadbury's chocolate one and my son bought me a ThronbridgerBrewery Calendar that I linked previously on another thread.

I know which one is my favourite.

Start at 1, I’m sure as a kid they had some that would go up to 25 with a full chocolate bar on Christmas Day.
Time of the day makes no difference, in our hours it’s just whenever anyone remembers that day.

Must admit I've not heard of anyone starting at 24. Do you celebrate Xmas Day on the 30th November?

Morning here too - first year in ages I've had one (actually got two). Candles and Cheeses. Middle Age creeping upon me! :ROFLMAO:

the other thing is what novelty advent calendars do you have this year?

in my house we have a premier league match attacks trading card calendar, a WWE mini Funko pop "countdown" calendar and a boots no.7 countdown calendar.

costs me a fortune! and 4 chocolate ones too

I got a herbal tea calendar this year and almost every morning has been a disappointment.

Tomorrow is turmeric, so the streak is going to continue.

Our 2 have Back to the Future playmobil advent calendars (one is based on BTTF2 and the other BTTF3). My eldest has now acquired the full set of this range of toys. They have naff all to do with Christmas like, but they don't care!

Must admit, I do love that yesterday's opening was the letter that Western Union brought to Marty in the thunder storm in 1955 just after Doc had been struck by lightning and sent back to 1885 in the Delorean.

Those are probably the two most mental suggestions I've read on here.
And that's saying something, because I've read Newy's transfer suggestions AND Nobby's managerial merry-go-round predictions. Although to be fair, the latter normally only involves Neil Warnock.

Anyway to answer the questions...

We buy ours a year in advance (usually half price late Dec) and open two a month from January onwards. The specific date we open them each month is determined by utilising a little bingo machine I bought in 1989. Obviously we open them in numerical order 1-24.

We open ours 16 minutes after one of us reports seeing the first dog of the day. This is usually before 11am but if by chance no-one has seen one by 10pm we will open it at 22:16. This only happened once, on April 21st 2020. Window 8 was sat there teasing us all day. It contained a little plastic hat which was a bit of an anticlimax.

We always open ours in the morning as it was a way to get the daughter up for school in December without whinging....plus the dog just sits looking at his all day if it's not opened first thing.

I was in Heron's last night, killing time waiting for the chippy tea, and I bought meself a Herseys cookie and cream one for a £1 and a pringles one...reduced to £5

Its become another scam to get the kids to eat chocolate 24 days running before receiving their bodyweight in chocolate on day 25.
At the risk of sounding like the old fart i am it was better when it was just opening windows

It’s not exactly a countdown to Christmas though, is it? The original advent calendar was used by the three wise men to track their charity camel ride. Or something.
