Adam Armstrong

It’s a shame as Armstrong was class for Southampton last season. Should really have been the team of the season.

From what I've read it's around £20/25k p/w.

Not sure about any loan fee though.

I'm sure it's not as rich as the AA loan though, hence we didn't do it.
Loan fees tend to be when you’ve got an asset that you want to keep not one you want to get rid of. Sevilla want him out, so I doubt there will be any significant loan fee

Just because a player moves to a rival, doesn’t mean that we had a chance to sign them and blew it. We probably did everything we thought possible, assuming we wanted him.

Plenty of reasons he might have gone there and not here. Money the obvious one in most cases. Closer to home? Playing under Mowbray again like he did for 3 years at Blackburn? We can’t compete with that.

Similarly with Brereton-Diaz - his missus is pregnant and she has friends / family in Sheffield which is why he went there. Doesn’t mean that any other club that tried to sign him screwed up, they never stood a chance.

Far too easy to criticise when we actually don’t know all the facts.

We were offered him first and turned it down. He’s at WBA because we said no.

I would have loved him here, but Iheanacho isn't a bad alternative!

If we're going to criticise the club for anything during the transfer window, it should be for leaving us weak in other areas.

Says who? Where are you getting that from?

95% of stuff in the media - especially around the transfer window - is either made up or completely exaggerated. You’re making it sound like he was desperate to come here and we were the only club being offered an amazing deal which we turned down - I would be amazed if this was true.

In reality, us and West Brom (and probably a host of other clubs) were maybe asked if we would be interested if we paid £xm loan fee and 100% of his wages. Maybe we said no to that. Maybe we even said yes, but so did West Brom, and he chose them.

Again, unless we were involved in the conversation, we can only guess as we just don’t know. My apologies if you have inside information I don’t have, and I’ve got it completely wrong - but I would be very surprised if we were “offered him”.

Still, that is just a media report. I personally don’t believe everything i read. Even if it’s true, I doubt we were the only club “offered him”.

Whether he’d have come is unknown as well. “The player is keen on a return to the north east?” Come on - does anyone really think he came out and said this? Or are journalists just making this up because he’s from Newcastle? Hmm….

I get why we're disappointed, but signing Armstrong for the financial numbers rumoured would have been a huge risk and one that I don't think we should've made - which I'm happy we avoided.

If we got Armstrong...he may have scored enough goals to get us in the PO's - and yet we still might make them without him.
Then in the PO's, we'd have been facing at least 1 of Sunderland, Burnley, Sheff Utd, Leeds...which again, I doubt Armstrong makes that much difference (our frailties lie in defence).

£5m the rumoured price...to barely make a difference on our chances of promotion? No thanks.

Adam Armstrong is a fabulous striker and arguably the best in the division, but £5m for a loan, for 4 months, when the auto's are long gone....no way should we be paying that.
