A Major Contribution to Carbon Footprint for a Football Club

I am sure we were the most localised fan base when we were in the premier league. Unfortunately transport infrastructure is terrible. If you think of all the fans and there must be thousands living in places like ingleby barwick theres really no alternative to the car. For me It takes over an hour on the bus and the nearest train station is 40 mins walk. I would love a train station in IB to goto the match and to work.
I already brought this up in a previous post. Living in Darlington, train travel to Middlesbrough should be easy. On a match day they do not put on extra carriages and regularly cancel trains. I've resorted to taking the car on a couple of occasions.

Whatever happened to the proposal for a wind turbine to contribute to electricity supply at the Riverside?
Surely this is a winner. The club could buy one and then sell it to another company owned by Steve Gibson for a vastly inflated price due to the increase in the cost of wholesale gas.

It is actual subject to a long ongoing legal battle at present. But Teesside Airport did object because the River Tees and the Riverside are directly on the flightpath and the wind turbine could be a navigational hazard.

The train company Northern Rail refused to put on extra carriages or trains when Radio One's Big Weekend was in Stewart Park. These rail franchises can do largely what they want or not do what they don't want.

We do need to take far more cars and car journeys out of our town centres but for that to happen on Teesside then public transport and car parking need to be stepped up as well as lighting and generally considering the safety of people, most especially women.

Fifteen minutes from the main railway station at the very most. That is so close.
Yes but there was talk of a stop outside the ground being fed from all the outlying areas, Nunthorpe etc. If it had happened and trains ran properly more people would use it than currently use the town station.

James Cook Halt hardly gets any use and the hospital is open 7 days a week. Here we are talking about a halt that is used once every two weeks. Obviously if it was a metro tram-like system then it would make real sense. That is what it needs to be.
But you have to ask yourself surely there is something very wrong if most people are not prepared to walk 10-15 minutes from the main station. Am not talking about those with walking problems but the majority of the crowd.

If we're all resigned to using cars to get to the Riverside then would it be feasible for a car share scheme to operate? Seems perfect for it with everyone heading to the same location.

Not that it is obvious who would run such a scheme.

The fanzine actually had a sponsor for a couple of years that was a local authorty backed car share scheme - they saw how logical it was for fans to share cars - lots of people going to the same place. It is a really good idea and might be something that the supporters forum and football club could look to put into place.

I think you will find the overwhelming majority of fans do car share far more than regular commuters. I think its a bit rich for people like yourself rob who live within the town of Middlesbrough trying to tell people not to use thier cars to go to the match when theres no viable alternative . A once a fortnight journey in a car when many travel daily by Car is going to make zero difference to climate change.

Why are you getting annoyed with me? Researchers have found that the biggest contribution to carbon footprint is from home fans going to the match. And this is in general for clubs not specifically Middlesbrough. Am not trying to tell anyone to do anything. Just is there a way here that fans and club could combine to reduce the impact on our climate?
