A debate on the efficacy of masks

Hmm, any evidence for that statement JM? Watch the debate and make your own mind up on whether masks work or not, then ask yourself the same question again.

Not interested enough to watch a 40 minute video on masks as im really not that interested, you can find people to argue for and against them from both sides without getting anywhere so it makes it all a bit pointless.

The WHO have stated they offer some benefit and most countries will make them mandatory anyway, why would they do that if they offered no benefit?

It doesnt really matter who wins the debate or who is the better speaker. Do masks inhibit the spread of aerosols and therefore stop the spread? - yes, they clearly do, so wear one!

No its not 100% effective but its better than nothing.

To be fair Lefty, my descriptors were both brief to give context to anyone who didn't watch. I certainly wouldn't attend a Johnson seminar on logic, given he abandoned it pretty early on in the debate.

I was just surprised that we had a philosopher v physicist in a debate about preventing the spread of infectious disease.

Johnson has been selected to do presentations for The Great Courses, which is usually a good indication he is worth listening to.

Depending on which science papers you read, they are not effective at all - up to a bit effective.

The bit I've yet to fully grasp, is if there is zero benefit in wearing a mask, what do the government gain from mandating their use?

I understand that some feel this an affront to their personal liberty (I don't personally) - does it follow that these same people assume this is the start of even greater restrictions on liberty?

And also other scientific papers saying they are effective and should be worn

You can pick and chose to fit your argument

Anaesthetist friend of mine tells me they're useless but I wear one in shops etc to keep the peace and you never know, he might be wrong. But it's his business, keeping people breathing.

I presume your anaesthetist friend wears a mask in the operating theatre?

Next time you see him, ask him why.

Of course you can Ironops, but only one set of conclusions will be correct. Oh and to be clear I have yet to find a paper that concludes there is a great benefit.

Road signs don't prevent all traffic accidents but should we do away with them?

It's about reducing the chance of spread surely, when combined with other methods?
How is that adding to the debate CtC? The question in the debate was "do masks have any effect at all" Not sure what road signs have to do with it, although I do see the point you are trying to make.

He does. He gets measured and fitted for one, it's tight so it doesn't leak round the sides, top or bottom and it's made of material which does the job. I don't need to ask.
