A debate on the efficacy of masks

I watched 30 mins but the second bloke is too boring for me to continue.

In a nutshell, a mask will stop you spreading the virus to others (assuming you have it, and are asymptomatic) BUT won't stop you catching the virus if spread by people NOT wearing a mask. So wearing a mask will help stop the spread so why not wear one?

Public health has improved massively over the last few centuries as knowledge of disease has increased, not least by surgeons etc keeping things clean - and wearing masks.
That is your conclusion, not the conclusion of the debate. The Philosopher became unhinged and gave no scientific evidence, it was all anecdotal. Watch it all and come back with an opinion, it may change

David Kyle Johnson specializes in and has published on logic, critical thinking, metaphysics, philosophy of religion, and philosophy of science. I'm not sure I'd describe him as simply a philosopher. He is much more than that.

Denis Rancourt is a former professor of physics at the University of Ottawa. He was sacked for grade inflation. It's pretty extraordinary for a tenured professor to be sacked. He also appears to be a climate change denier. In fact, he looks like someone making a living from being controversial these days.

I haven't listened to the debate yet mind you.

To be fair Lefty, my descriptors were both brief to give context to anyone who didn't watch. I certainly wouldn't attend a Johnson seminar on logic, given he abandoned it pretty early on in the debate.

"No scientific evidence, all anecdotal"

That's enough for me to side with Kyle, cheers :)

Watch it, it is very entertaining, particularly when they get to the wrap up. I suspect at that point it will give a new perspective on Kyle Johnsons qualifications.

Speechless

I'm just confused as to why the wearing of them is such a big issue for some? Obviously the type of masks that we wear are not a hundred percent perfect, but they have to be better than nothing

Ok last comment because I need to focus but...
If masks are not at all effective what is the mandate for wearing them (even if they had 0 side effects, just think about the mental health effect on many people as well as the deaf who lip read)? Watch the debate it may help you assess the effectiveness of them.

Anaesthetist friend of mine tells me they're useless but I wear one in shops etc to keep the peace and you never know, he might be wrong. But it's his business, keeping people breathing.

Think some on here want to believe believe its some big government conspiracy

Honestly struggle to understand why people are so against wearing one
Hmm, any evidence for that statement JM? Watch the debate and make your own mind up on whether masks work or not, then ask yourself the same question again.

Sure the WHO have concluded they give some protection against passing the virus to others? Probably impossible to determine how much without years of research but considering they would cause no harm for the majority of the population to wear one, what is the issue? Not going to find any other way of reducing transmission thats as cheap and easy to use whilst causing zero disruption to peoples lives
