750 Jobs to Teesworks.

I was onsite for a project meeting a couple of weeks ago, height of party stuff & was surprised at the support Johnson had, even from the drainage contractor's labourer "who else is there to vote for?".
"who else is there to vote for". It's frightening but as an earlier post said "they got Brexit done", even though many still don't know what the impact had been on the country. In this country we have newspapers like the Mail, the Express and the Sun, which all have high sales, and all spew out right wing propaganda by mocking socialism. In addition, Skynews also leans to the right.
I despair with some of my fellow Brits 😤

These figures are a little out of date (Sept 2021) and provided by the Tees Valley Combines Authority the 2010 figures are from the House of Commons Library Unemployment Statistics 2010

Darlington (2010) - 3155; Darlington (2021) - 3898
Hartlepool (2010) - 4363; Hartlepool (2021) - 4435
Middlesbrough (2010) - 5384; Middlesbrough (2021) - 7988
Redcar & Cleveland (2021) - 3943; Redcar & Cleveland (2021) - 4845
Stockton (2010) 7023; Stockton (2021) - 6951

Total claiming unemployment benefit in 2010 = 23,868
Total claiming unemployment benefit in 2010 = 28,117
An increase of 4249.

So there were more people claiming unemployment in the Tees Valley in September 2021 than there were in 2010.

As alluded to on this thread the cult of personality is part of the problem isn't it? People are not voting for Johnson, but think of it that way. It's a terrible situation where people in the North are voting Tory thinking there is no alternative, as they've been totally primed to hate Starmer and Corbyn before him.

They don't really have high sales, just in comparison to other papers. There are only about 3m newspapers in circulation each day (including the free ones), that's 15% of registered voters at most. Most people get their news from other sources these days although they do push headlines and articles online via social media. Makes it hard to know what their true reach is. The Guardian is not far behind the mail online and the mail has a huge amount of people that only visit the celebrity gossip section.

Cheers American Mary for some figures.

Obviously Sept 2021 is still affected by Covid.

The figures show unemployment is still a big issue in the Tees Valley.

I have found some figures for Dec 2021 from Tees Valley Combined Authority (attached below)

Tees Valley 21,431 unemployed and on U/C (Dec 2021)

This is a 2,437 reduction in unemployed and claiming benefit on 2010.

18.1% of the Tees Valley population is claiming Universal Credit which shows a lot of working people on low incomes (most will be in some form of work). Compared with GB average of 13.7%. UC to me shows people in clear poverty. So Tees Valley has much more poverty that GB and work needs to be done to close the gap by raising economic activity in the Tees Valley relative to GB.

What stats don't show of course are people who have to work away during the week to find work.

I would say BBC, C4 and ITV have an influence on opinion, probably more than printed newspapers nowadays, particularly on the over 40s, who vote more. Their agenda is not right wing.

The media companies in general are based in metropolitan areas of the UK and their staff tend to live and work in those enviroments and are influenced by that. The 2016 EU Referendum vote certainly shocked a large % of the media who never visited and stayed in places like Teesside or dare I guess ever lived there. They didn't understand there was such deep seated anger, as in their World the UK was an increasingly prosperous country.

I'd add that they're also likely to live in a cosmopolitan area so less likely to see immigration as a big monster like lots of post-industrial northern towns.

Nero

Areas like central Middlesbrough voted strongly for Brexit. Middlesbrough Central has a diverisified population.

Uncontrolled immigration is seen by a lot of people as increasing the labour supply and competition for jobs, in areas where decently paid full time jobs are not easy to get. I tend to think overall immigration grows economies, but the issue for me what that increasing differences were developing in the UK and this was not adequetely getting addressed by the EU or UK Governments. I know from comments some on here thought the EU was making a big positive difference in helping Teesside.
