5 days freedom for Christmas

I'm with you, purely because you're bringing infected school children until contact with grandparents which could kill a few off. If personally add a week on before Xmas hills for school children if they're determined to have 5 days freedom to make all of them isolate for 14days before Xmas day.

No it's a stupid idea, most people in this country are not active christians, and people from other religions have given up their religious holidays. We don't break this for a week just to pander some people that have invisible friends, and anyone that cares about their family wouldn't go and endanger them right now. I'm sure some people will take offence at that, and your welcome to, that's your opinion, mine is that it's stupid and selfish to endanger your family just because it's christmas, and I'm happy with that stance.

Several vaccines are going to be available soon - why throw away all the progress we are making during this current "lock down"? We can all meet up with our families and loved ones when we've all been vaccinated. Exercise a bit of patience. Is a pee-up worth the death of a few mates or family, just because it's Christmas?

So for 5 days of eating / drinking and passing presents they lockdown again for a month? Good god no
I don't see how anyone would want this? How many businesses will go under whilst closed for a another month or jobs lost? It's f*cking Christmas... Its nothing special unless you're a young kid who believes in santa (sorry for the spoiler
).
I just think it's a bit of a smoke screen. The government want to lockdown again and basically offering Xmas 'off' to appease people. Although I have to say most people would travel and meet family no matter what restrictions are in place.
That said open up the Riverside and get 30k in for boxing day and I'll do anything

It's clearly a start but it's not a short term fix. Many could still not have had it this time next year

That’s the point. It’s effectively a threat from government I think. “We know you’re gonna break the rules so we’ll let you do it but by the way, you’re stopping in all through January so get used to it now”.

I’m not sure the illness has to be completely eradicated does it? If old and vulnerable aren’t being hospitalised surely we can have some degree of normality if NHS isn’t strained?

I think they know that people are going to do what they want at Christmas anyway so are going to try and facilitate it rather than fight it.
Ironically, if the government had a proper well thought out strategy and the many many selfish people had done as they needed to over the last 8 months then there wouldn't be any need for a 5 day window.
One thing is for sure, I won't be going anywhere near a pub during those 5 days.

My local did a fantastic job when they were allowed to open. No one has been pinged.

The media seem to be portraying it as 5 days coming at a cost - the cost being 25 days of lockdown. Isn't the cost also going to be more seriously ill and dead people? Seems a ludicrous idea to me.

You do realise that pretty much the whole hospitality business rely on December takings to see them through Jan/Feb the next year.

The message is odd - ‘Spend time with your family and friends over the xmas period then mourn for some of them in Jan/Feb ..........

I’d relax it to something like the rule of six for 2 days.
Many people aren’t following the rules as they are so it’s going to be futile and a waste of time and energy trying to get them to do it over Christmas.
They don’t have the resources to enforce the rules as it is, so you’ve got no chance over Christmas.
Give people the information they need, make them aware of the risks and let them decide for those two days.
