Arteta was right to complain about this one
Except he didn't. Not at first anyway. Watch his interview again. He wasn't complaining about that one he was complaining about the other earlier one, the one where one of his defenders got blocked off as the kick was first taken. That's what the broadcast commentary at the time focused on too. The first we heard there might have been a later offside was some time after the final whistle. Don't get me wrong, Mason was clearly wrong to miss the second offside incident by over-focusing on the first. He should have looked at both. But Arteta made the same mistake.

Of course, if the EPL used the automatic AI system the CL and Serie A has, and the World Cup had, rather than their bizarre human looking at a single freeze frame and drawing lines with a biro system they'd have been fine I suspect.

What I don’t get about the incident, the pundits go on about the incident at edge of box and the blocking off taking so long.

If it was clear and obvious then why would it take so long. Can only take that long if analysing in detail and trying to find an issue with it.

And would it not make more sense to work back from Toneys touch to check for offsides and infringement. If had done this the blocking at edge of the box would not have even entered the equation.

I.e pass to Toney off side, job done

But Arteta isn’t paid to be VAR and was watching the game in real time, so it’s not really a mistake on his part.

You're conflating two different aspects of the VAR process. There are basically two different kinds of errors VAR looks at: referee judgment errors (these are the ones where the "clear and obvious" criteria apply) and factual questions such as whether a player was in an offside position or what the location of a foul was (inside or outside the penalty area, mainly) which are the ones where very precise measurements come into play.

So VAR analyzes both C&O errors and analyses situations where centimetres or millimetres are important, depending on the circumstances. The two are not mutually exclusive.
Millimetres is just indicative of of the ridiculous influence of VAR imo.

I appreciate what you have written though so that comment isn’t a pop at you.

I think they need to get some tech savvy people in to - run - the tech & just have the refs judge the decision.
They should also stick to the mantra - Clear & Obvious - not a mm here & there... ideally with offsides I'd like a computer to be giving the decision in real time - even if offside law needs to go back to being a simple anyone offside is offside.

Arteta like - all - managers are obnoxious when results go against them, they are not used to it.

Heckingbottom was ranting about all the slights they've suffered & yet failed to see his players holding ours back... too many managers & fans just unable to be balanced

Whereas it’s important to remember every person makes mistakes, it was inexcusable that VAR got it so badly wrong. The system was introduced to prevent obvious errors impacting results but they contributed to one instead.

Arsenal are quite correctly furious about it.

Noticed there seems to be a lot more (puny) fines getting dished out to clubs for failing to control their players - in all 4 leagues.

And also the en-masse surrounding of the ref. Seemed to disappear from the game for a while, but seems to have made an unwelcome comeback.

And the diving/rolling around clutching of face....don't get me started. Good to see in the woman's game a player got done for feigning this injury.
