3 Best/most exciting non-boro players you've seen at the riverside

If we can have just one more allowed for Ayresome... Noel Brotherston.
27th November 1982.
Those very few of us who were there will remember.
Never seen one player be so utterly imperious. He single handedly destroyed us. He could have played on his own and we'd still have lost 5-1.
Ah, the days when social distancing at Boro matches was a given 😁
Did you see the young Darren Anderton tear us a new one as well Lemmy?

Funny thing is I never really notice the opposition's players as I'm too busy paying attention to what our lot are doing. Which is a bit daft really seeing as I've seen some of the greatest players in the world playing against us. It's like going to a gallery and ignoring the Caravaggio's, Manet's, and Picasso's and instead making a beeline for the work of Neil Buchanan.

Henry, Bergkamp.

Its probably Ronaldo, but I'm going to say Son: I think he was the only player who made me think "wow, he's much better than I thought" last time we were in the PL
In that same game I thought Deli AlIi was absolutely superb as well as Son. Spurs movement that day destroyed us.

Peter Shilton in what I think was a 0-0 draw agaist Stoke. He saved everything

Darren Anderton destroyed us in a cup replay for Portsmouth.

Possibly Berkamp or Henry for third place.

Depends if you think scoring goals is exciting I suppose. He was definitely one of the best to play against Boro at the Riverside.
He was a superb old school number 9. I never found the way he played particularly exciting. Certainly not compared to someone like Henry. There's no doubting his caliber.

Remember Kinkladze scoring one of his trademark goals against us....bettered in the same game by Phil Stamp!

Thought Adam Llanna was outstanding for Liverpool against us in our last Premier League Season.

We were taught a midfield lesson by Viera a few times, which made our occasional victories against Arsenal sweeter.

I remember Lee Bowyer destroying us one time for Leeds. Think it was during the 00/01 season, whilst he was on trial for the assault on the Asian lad, so our fans were singing, "Bowyer's going down". He seemed to be extra fired up and we couldn't contain him. Remember him taunting us in the North stand after he'd scored.

Arsenal and Man U were the first names that sprang to mind as by far the best teams we played of that generation, but funny how no individual performance really stands out. Best team performance was Arsenal 6-1, I remember the Riverside applauding that last Kanu goal.

Also funny how Arsenal always gave us a shoeing but we’d always give United a game, would either be a hard-fought 0-1 or we’d win, but Arsenal would just tear us a new one. Bad matchup for the way we played I suppose plus Robbo / McClaren extra motivation factor. Man U never played champagne football against us.

For individuals, Kanu did stand out, as did Henry, Vieira and Anelka, he’s not been mentioned yet but he was class. United Ronaldo, Scholes, was always impressed by Giggs and Keane even though they didn’t individually dominate us.

Same, I concentrate on Boro more so don’t notice the opposition as much. It’s weird being in the Premier League so long and talking to kids today saying, “Yeah, I saw Rooney, Ronaldo, Gerrard, Drogba, Beckham, Bergkamp play loads of times, but can’t remember a great deal of what they did - but let me talk about Bolo Zenden for ten hours”

This will sound mental but being younger I remember Dean Kiely constantly having blinders against us and it used to do my head in.

Very good point. My Man Utd supporting barber in his early 20s was very impressed that I had been at a game when they had lifted the Premier League Trophy!

Similarly, when first looking at this thread I could remember Mark Summerbell and Craig Harrison but had forgotten watching Gianfranco Zola or Marc Overmars!
