26 years ago today we said farewell to our beloved Ayresome Park

Some of Tim Hetherington's pics printed in the issue.

BM - I decided I couldn't leave and am still here. But am down near the Boys End corner.
I was describing yesterday how John Hendrie recreated the final goal ten years after the event by starting his run from someone's doorstep to sneak the ball home at the front post - now marked by a bronze dipped denim jacket plonked over a fence.

I've always fancied having a wander around the estate to see these sort of landmarks, as I've only driven past it a few times since 1995 and never stopped to have a look around. However, I'd be worried I would look like a complete nutter or like I was on the rob, just randomly wandering around staring at stuff and looking lost.

Do you see many such lunatics from your front window?

Yes occasionally - I showed around a Boro fan over from Australia once that I saw from my window. A couple of years ago I saw Chris Kamara being filmed - after filming was over I gave him a tour. I gave a film crew up from London a tour just yesterday.
In a few weeks we can arrange to meet and I can give you a tour - maybe show you the site of Ironopolis Paradise Ground as well.

I remember I was looking after my grand parents house the week before that game amd didn't have a ticket. My uncle phoned and said Luton had sent back a chunk of their allocation and they were going on sale the following morning. It is the one and only time I've queued overnight for anything, seem to remember there was about 20 of us outside the Clive Road ticket office from about 1 in the morning. All worth it for two tickets in the away end, which ironically meant I had been in every part of Ayresome Park to watch the Boro 😁

We all met at The Porthole after a night shift at Boro fire station and had a hearty breakfast before a lovely walk through the park to Inn of the Park . Remember that lovely banner from Luton fans wishing us well which was a lovely touch and always had a soft spot for them since . Loved those times 😪 ( getting upset now ) 😢

One question that got lost in the euphoria of the day:

Why did Neil Cox take the penalty?

I just assumed most of the others bottled it. With the pressure of promotion and the last match at Ayresome all rolled into one it was a high pressure kick. So I always thought fair play to him for putting himself forward.
