20 mph replacing 30 mph

I've been working in and around London for a few months. 20mph zones everywhere.

It's an absolute nightmare to drive and actually stay under 20 mph. Are cars 'designed' to sit at 20 mph for 2-3 miles ? I mean I'm no tree hugger yet sitting at 20 mph in a city in 3rd or 4th gear can't be great for emissions?

Tbf it’s difficult to get up to 20mph on some roads in London during the peak times…

A blanket restriction doesn't make sense and will not be supported (see Wales).

It wasn’t a blanket restriction was it? I think they still had some 30 limits.

I think it’s a great idea btw, less pollution, less accidents, less deaths, less noise. It might even encourage some out of heir cars and maybe walk or cycle.

Most journeys are under 5 miles anyway, a lot even less. People surely can cope with 20mph limits?

all 30's went to 20. It is unpopular and kinda difficult in 4th gear. 3rd is no problem but does take getting used to

I'd be surprised if Wales got rid of the default 20mph at the moment. In June they released the collision data for 2023 which included the first three months of the default 20mph limit from October to December 2023, which was the lowest quarterly figure on record outside of Covid lockdowns and meant that there were around 1/3 less collisions in 20 & 30 mph zones in 2023 than 2022.
