14 point Tory lead - Disastrous polling for Labour

The smarty pants people on here were giving it the 'he needs to support the government on Corona and pick them apart later'.

I guarantee had he come out strong and gone after them for evidence on absolutely everything they'd be polling higher now.

If he'd have fought and opposed the governments emergency powers rather than going along he'd be polling higher now.

Instead as things keep unraveling the next 12 months at best he will be seen as not offering an alternative and at worst being totally complicit.

Will he make it to the next election?

I just think he's been invisible. The only people I seem to see on TV or hear talked about are Boris Johnson and Matt Hancock.

Andy Burnham has been more in the spot light that Starmer.

If you're not visible you are not going to be seen to be doing anything. Boris is a household name now, and whether you like it or not he is intrinsically linked to "the medicine that is going to improve this situation".

In my extended family I have heard of:
Boris boxes for the elderly during the pandemic
Boris medicine so granny can soon see you
Boris is opening up the swimming pools again

If you dont have the media supporting that visibility equally I expect you'll suffer greatly in the polls. Boris or Hancock are almost ALWAYS front page on the BBC news site, and many others. A lot of Starmers messages/ comments/ scrutiny in parliament dont even make it to these websites.

You'd have to say though that the government are so dreadful that anyone who's even half paying attention would be wanting them out, even if that meant voting for the current Labour party.

But it just shows how apathetic people are to politics in this country. And have been for years. Just go by bullet pints in the Sun, Mail etc and soundbites off news and TV.

I just don't understand how the sleaziest Government in my lifetime is so far ahead in the polls?

It seems to me that people are a blinded by the success of the vaccine rollout at the minute and couldn't really care how their money is being spent to line the pockets of cabinet ministers, ex prime ministers and their chums.

I honestly thought after last spring that the Tories wouldn't stand a chance of getting back in and Starmer just needed to stay in the shadows and let them make a pigs ear out of fighting Covid. It seems not being visible enough has cost him. As alluded to, all the major Tories are household names now, even for those who don't follow politics. The shadow cabinet couldn't get selected out of a line up by many.

I suspect many people just think (wrongly) what’s the point? The other lot aren’t going to make my life any better.

When all the leader of the opposition can offer them is a nice suit and pretending to love flags as oppose to actual policy, it’s not easy to convince these people.

I have a very simple rule of thumb when it comes to political leaders as many people aren’t that interested in the actual policies. Who would you trust with A: your other half and B: your money.

YouGov usually do their polls once a week, with their last one released just 3 days ago. Bit strange for them to do another one so soon which conveniently covers the pubs reopening.

Additionally this poll has the Tories ahead in London by 2 points which is very suspicious.

But again it's done its job at grabbing attention.

The success of the vaccine roll out is having a massive impact on Tory popularity. The number of deaths also seems largely forgotten now.

Those into politics might feel strongly about Starmer. I doubt the average bloke on the street cares one way or another (and maybe that is part of the problem, but hard to fix when most of the media is practically state controlled). But what people are seeing is huge success with the vaccine and lockdown easing while the rest of Europe (or the world even) struggles. Too many people are poorly informed and/or have too short an attention span.

The Corbyn fan boys have had it in for Starmer from day one though. Much like the Blairites when Corbyn was leader, it seems they'd rather have a corrupt, inept, borderline evil Tory government in charge than the "wrong type" of Labour government.

I despair. I said the same thing when Corbyn was leader. Whatever you think of Labour they are still infinitely preferable to the alternative. It's not remotely close.

I don't expect people to be enthusiastic about it, but anyone with any sort of moral compass and an ounce of common sense should be sucking it up and voting to remove this lot from power given the chance.
