🐙Cut your energy bills nearly in half with Octopus Tracker

Have just switched to octopus after my super lucky 3 Yr fixed deal comes to an end 😢 will I be able to switch to tracker if I only have a smets1 smart meter? TIA.

Octopus upgraded my smet1 meters to smet2's on 14th Feb... Had no issues with th smet1s, but octopus said we needed to upgrade them.
Gas meter only started communicating last week... The Electric one... Not communicating at all.
Need an engineer to come and look at it because they can't talk to it remotely.
Need to wait 6-8weeks for engineers to get in touch with us for us then to arrange for them to attend.
Need to manually input the electric meter readings for time being, as the IHD and Octopus Mini are useless until it's sorted.
I'm on the tracker tariff too... So they obviously don't need you to have half hourly readings to be on it like they say, but hey ho.

If you aren't communicating they will average the daily rate over the month so you benefit but not as good as wont see accrued usage etc

4 million 'smart' meters currently not working. You can't tell me this isn't just another scam
If it's a scam, not sure how it works. I saved £850 last year, and on Saturday I charged my EV for 30p for 200 miles. I certainly don't feel scammed. Meanwhile the price cap currently about 29p.

Any smart meter not "working" still works no different to a trad meter, not really any downsides.

The down-side comes when they introduce surge pricing.

For context there are 31 million working fine if 4 million aren't, so over 80% are fine and 20% are working no differently to a standard meter.

The horror.

The ones that aren't working can either be remote upgraded via firmware or swapped out. A few won't be able to communicate because of location, solutions for that are being worked on. Many will be close to their 10 year EOL anyway, given how long ago the first meter rollouts were. Government pushed suppliers to roll out smets1 meters, no conspiracy here.

I think there probably is a bit of a valid conspiracy. They were rushed out, and we will be paying for them though our bills. Someone will have made a lot of money out of them. They are a perfectly logical thing to have but the way they were rushed out without a universal standard was either super dumb or it benefited someone. My guess is the latter.

The current gen of smart meters makes more sense and should benefit us all via lower bills and being able to use the data to manage load better.

That's not really a conspiracy, it's just bad planning.

Anyone having issues getting a smart meter fitted?

I was on the Nov22 tracker then got the email a few weeks ago moving me to the Dec23 tracker.
In that email it stated that I wouldn't be able to move onto the the next years tracker if I didn't have a smart meter (which I don't).
I've been on CS a couple times asking for one but it seems like either there is a waiting list but it's a difficult job in my area.
Anyway, a bit of a catch-22. I want a smart meter to stay on the tracker but can't get one.

Just keep on at them - I use twitter. Just message every few days and ask if can check for any cancellations etc

How are you finding agile? Evening peak of 21p is still pretty good.
I'm saving good money on it especially now using an EV. The only load shifting we do is dishwasher and washing machine on overnight on timer to the best slots, plus the car charge.

The evening peak is usually higher like 30p or so but even though we are high users of elec, rest of time usage more than balances it out. We only switched mid march and saved £20 vs tracker but probably not a lot in it without an EV and some load shifting

How much time do you afford daily to keep track on agile?

I've got a battery and the capacity to loadshift but I am struggling to reconcile the effort in doing so with just running with the tracker and turning my brain off.

I was hoping to see obvious patterning to off peak to set the battery to charge but it does appear i'd have to pay some attention to get the best value out of the switch.

About 20 seconds

We use octopus compare which gives you the cheapest slots for how long you need to charge / run a device for

I'd presume there would be some sort of automation you'd be able to do with battery charging e.g setting a price cap that it doesn't charge over
