Sorry was on a work call so gave a quick answer but this is in more depth

Basically in December octopus made a new version of the tracker, it's a tiny bit more expensive on gas and 1-2p more expensive on electricity

If you go to gastracker.uk and select December 2023 tariff for north east you can see the rates difference vs one of the earlier ones, it's more expensive but miles cheaper than anything else out there so it's still a no brainer for now

Unit rates will still change daily, but the formula is then fixed for 12 months, at which point you then renew again

Down to how ofgem implants price cap as if the tariff has no end date they can't enforce the price cap which would cause problems if prices ever spike

Everyone getting moved over on feb 15th I think

yeah i had the same mail. getting moved as the November 2022 tracker is closing.

just emailed them the other day to refund and drop my direct debit as i am saving that much. changes were made right away

Octopus seem to take ages to process a refund request, did one online 10 days ago and still says pending.

getting the octopus home mini sent out today

Are they worth it and do they work on the tracker tariff? My current IHD doesn't change the tariff price daily, its been set the same price since the 1st day it was plugged in.

It works fine.

You use it with the app. The mini sends the usage data and the app uses the current daily tracker price to give your spend šŸ‘

Yeah, they work on the tracker. They're not a game changer and it depends on how much you keep an eye on your energy consumption as to whether you'll get any benefit from it. Not a bad tool to have though.

The mini just replaces the part of the IHD (the home display) that apps can't replicate which is real time elec usage.

Someone said it sends readings but any time my meter drops off octopus doesn't get the readings so even though they told me that, it can't do else that wouldn't be an issue, but it's a tweet sent every few weeks so not a hardship

It's tiny, just plug it in somewhere out of sight and forget about it. You see the info in octopus app but there are also some third party apps that use it too e.g octo watch on iOS

I'd just unplug the ihd because the Ā£ usage is always going to be wrong and apps have all the info you need

mine has just arrived. i am mainly looking to see how much the kids are using with all of their ***** plugged in on a night!!

You can already get that without the mini, either in octopus or a third party app. Your smart meter will break down usage into half hourly intervals. The mini just lets you add real time use, with about 10 seconds lag

Just keep in mind phantom load overnight - fridges / freezers / standby stuff

Phones charging cost about Ā£2 a year max

Stuff like games consoles being played or gaming PCs running will cost a lot, gaming pcs not running games will use some but nowhere near as much as the psu will step the supply and the guy draw will be negligible

I find it odd that the tracker rates have changed for the worse, but appreciate it's largely been forced on Octopus by the government/ market, but why? I think it's because too many people have been cottoning on to the scam that is our UK energy pricing, and the markets have got scared of Octopus and how they had lost their lock in. I'm more convinced than ever that there's something going on behind the scenes to exploit energy customers.

Remember when some were slating or concerned by the tracker and non-fixed tariffs like agile, and worried a big gas peak was coming back? Well, its not happened, as there was no reason it would come back, it's not like Russia could blow up their own pipelines for a second time, or cut back on what they're not supplying.

Have a look at the US futures gas prices below. They are now are basically at the lowest level they've been for been for a decade, and back to levels from the 90's!

So, if electric prices got jacked, well in advance, largely because of futures gas prices, and the gas is already (and futures are) at such low prices then how come fixed electric prices haven't come down, and why are the energy caps so quick to go up, and so slow to come down? Profiteering, and it's worse now than it's ever been. At least prior, the energy companies could say they were concerned about what markets could do and were covering their ****, but what are they covering now?

UK gas futures are basically half of the lowest they've been for two years (other than this winter futures price decline), and conveniently the UK futures graphs only go back two years, wonder why that is?

Why are they still talking about price cap rates (and basically trying to get the public to repeat this narrative?), and not unit price rates? Because it makes it easier for them to hide what's going on.

Why aren't Ofgem doing their job? What really is their job, is it protecting consumers, or suppliers profits?

Price cap rates are 29p per kWh, to March, why? It should have already been less than 15p already, whole winter, and those using smart tarrifs way less than this.

Electric futures prices are Ā£58/MWh (less than gas even costs to generate), which is 5.8p per kWh, so why are fixed payers paying 28p?

Anyone got a guess on what the new price cap figures will be when released on 23rd Feb? My bet is ~25p, when in reality they could likely be half that and still making massive profits.

Energy prices are a big factor with inflation, and growth, everything relies on it, so why have we only seen such minor deflation in energy? With energy, things are supposed to have an equal and opposite reaction, so why hasn't it? Who's getting the money, and why?

The market is fixed for suppliers, plain and simple.

Just look at standing charges, the supposed temporary hike to pay for failed suppliers has now become a permanent fixture.

The forecast price cap rates from march onwards drop quite steeply

It's no tracker, but unless octopus price goes down a bit more on tracker the gas is less of a difference. Elec still a decent difference

Tracker averages 17.2p/44.11p last 30 days
